My story

[p]In June 2014 I will be taking a sabbatical to undertake a 3 month placement in Rwanda with Engineers Without Borders UK. [/p][p]I will be working with Health Poverty Action (HPA) to oversee the design, planning and construction of EcoSan Toilets in Nyaruguru district, Rwanda. I will be part of HPA’s SALTWASH (Saving Lives Through Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) program which aims to improve access to sustainable drinking water and sanitation in Rwanda in order to reduce mortality and help prevent diseases. EcoSan toilets are sanitation systems that do not require any water to function, which is ideal for rural Nyaruguru where piped water is rare.[/p][p]A total of £2400 is needed to cover the costs of the placement. So far I've raised money from running the Rome Marathon, taking a challenge to live below the poverty line by spending only £1 a day on food and drink for 5 days, baking 260 cakes for a cake sale and organising for everyone at work to dress up as the flags of EWB's international partner countries. [/p][p]If you're able to sponsor me then that would be absolutely brilliant. Engineers Without Borders is a really great charity - I've been involved with them for the past 8 years and they've given me lots of great opportunities to get involved in international development over that time. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p][p]Here's a bit more about the organisation:[/p][p]EWB-UK empowers thousands of new engineers to remove barriers to human development in various ways: by focusing on developing the skills and attitudes of young engineers in the UK; promoting a global outlook within the UK engineering industry and education sector; and preparing individuals for a career in engineering within International Development. EWB-UK delivers placements, research, training, school outreach and festivals.[/p][p]The EWB-UK International Placements Programme creates direct positive impact for our international partners in countries across Africa, Asia and South America, whilst providing unique experiences for highly committed volunteers who wish to develop careers in the engineering and development sector.[/p][lt]div class="fundraiserEventText"[gt]We assist our international partners with essential engineering expertise, deliver over 250 training workshops in the UK each year, support research and help develop new technologies to tackle global challenges.[lt]br /[gt][lt]br /[gt]Our vision is one of a world where access to technology and infrastructure is not a barrier to poverty alleviation.[lt]/div[gt][p][/p]
