Team story

[p]Within days of the genocide beginning, genocidaires under Jean Baptiste Gatete, in Kiziguro, slaughtered around 3,000 people who, as in so many other parts of Rwanda, had sought refuge in a local church. Some victims were forced to dump the bodies in a nearby manhole before they too were killed and tossed amongst the dead.[/p][p]The Kiziguro memorial site is centred around this manhole in which lay 3,000 victims of the genocide whose bodies were dumped there after the mass slaughter in Kiziguro Parish.[/p][p]Survivors and relatives of those murdered at Kiziguro finally saw a degree of justice delivered in 2011, when a key mastermind of the slaughter at Kiziguro on 11 April 1994 was sentenced by the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda to life imprisonment, albeit 17 years late.[/p][p]SURF is now raising funding to erect a memorial wall on which the names of all 3,000 victims will be inscribed.[/p][p]This memorial wall will at least ensure that the dead are remembered with dignity.[/p][p]We will complete the project once the funding is raised, which we hope will be by 2015.[/p][p]Any donations will be most gratefully received![/p][p]Thank you.[/p][p]The Survivors Fund (SURF) Team[/p]

Raised by Trevor King who ran 62 miles over one week. A huge thank you to all the staff at The Royal Borough of Greenwich who have donated to this worthy cause. It's still not too late to donate if I missed you last week.

I have met Immaculee and heard the traumatic story of what befell Kiziguro. Man's inhumanity to man is astonishing.
