My story

[p]I’m Sam and I’m running the London Marathon for the first time in October. I’m fundraising for Good Vibrations, the amazing charity I work for as a facilitator. [/p][p][br][/p][p]About Good Vibrations [/p][p]Good Vibrations work with some of the most vulnerable and hard to reach people in our society, in prisons, secure hospitals, and the community. We use the transformative power of communal music-making to change people’s lives for the better. We are best known for using the Indonesian gamelan, a magnificent set of brass gongs, xylophones and drums which are perfectly designed for people of all abilities to make beautiful music together. We support people to build trust in others, confidence in themselves and hope for the future.[/p][p][br][/p][p]‘I just felt there was a sense of freedom. It was the first time I felt truly free to express how I was feeling through music. It took me away from my environment it opened me up to experience emotions that I was suppressing because of my anger, because I didn’t want to be perceived as weak as I felt. The whole thing gave me an experience I needed at the time, which was to be able to relax and feel something. For me, it was my first step to communicating with the outside world, which before I was refusing to let in.’[/p][p]Russ Haynes, past-participant and patron of Good Vibrations[/p][p][br][/p][p]About me[/p][p]I am multidisciplinary facilitator, with a diverse career spanning education, community building and participatory arts.[/p][p]Driven by a passion for collective joy, I founded and led secular congregation Sunday Assembly East End, and created mental health festival A Mindful Mess. Alongside my current work with Good Vibrations I am developing a collaborative learning project around fatherhood, and also teach meditation and mental resilience practices.[/p][p]As someone with a history of mental health struggles and an interest in the social determinants of mental health, I have found Good Vibrations work to be incredibly moving, profound and valuable - you can read more about my experiences and reflections as a Good Vibrations facilitator here: https://www.good-vibrations.org.uk/sam-weatherald-blog/[/p][p]This work is especially essential as we emerge from lockdown conditions in which many of the people we work with have not been able to access services like this, or been allowed family visits. [/p][p]Though I'm pretty nervous about the steep training curve ahead, I'm really proud to be running the London Marathon in aid of Good Vibrations... Thankyou for your support![/p][p][br][/p]
