Team story

[p]We are 2 great friends who share a love of physical challenges! Between us we've completed several Half Iron Man competitions and triathlons, run various marathons and half marathons, swum around the Scilly Isles and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to name but a few - but in recent years our fun has very much come in the form of cycling and together we've spent hours on road bikes racking up the miles around Devon. Much of it has been for the enjoyment of riding although we have completed a number of local sportives including the Exmoor Beauty, Taunton Flyer and Hammer Martello. [/p][p]Last year together we decided to take on an iconic ride around the Brecon Beacons and completed the very hilly and very long 140 mile, one day event, L'Etape Wales aka the Dragon Ride - famed for it's alpine climbs! [/p][p]Whilst we've done some pretty challenging events in the past, this is by far the biggest thing either of us have ever contemplated. The Deloitte Ride Across Britain will see us ride 980 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats, in 9 consecutive days. Each day we'll be riding well over 100 miles, dealing with whatever terrain and weather the UK has to throw at us. Whilst we'll relish the physical challenge there is a more serious side to our adventure and that's to raise as much money as we can for 2 charities that are close to our hearts. [/p][p]Sam was lucky enough to grow up on a dairy farm and started working for Farms for City Children in 2015. The charity offers urban primary school children the opportunity to live and work on one of their three farms, for a week of 'muck and magic'. The impact it can have on the children can be life changing, and the farms are totally screen-free, so any spare time is spent outdoors whenever possible. The charity subsidises each and every place, as it knows the majority of families would be unable to afford the true cost of providing this unique experience. And with no government funding, the charity has to raise over £1m every year.[/p][p]Sarah has been supporting Hospiscare since 2017 and has been to see first-hand the amazing work they do to offer specialist nursing, medical treatment and care of complex needs to those in Exeter and the surrounding area, who have a terminal diagnosis. They have a fantastic team of 160 staff and over 1,000 volunteers that provide free care to patients and their families, but at a cost of £6.4m per year and only £1.25m funded by the government, their team have a huge challenge of their own to raise funds each year.[/p][p]We are under no illusion that this event is going to be epic and test us to the limits, both physically and mentally. Our training plan will also be gruelling and will make us question our sanity and physical ability at times, but we both know the difference we can make to these charities through our efforts.[/p][p]If you are able to make a donation, we would really appreciate it, to keep us pedalling and our spirits up all the way.[/p]
