My story

[p]I signed up to swim the English Channel in March last year, however I never fully let myself believe that it was something I was going to be able to achieve. After dislocating both my shoulders in July the goal was further away than ever. Through sheer stubbornness I have slowly clawed my way back on track. I’ve recently completed my 6 hour qualifier swim so it’s all systems are go for the swim in September. [/p][p][br][/p][p]For those that don’t know, the English Channel swim is from Dover to Cap Gris Nez and is 21miles (if swum in a straight line). The water temperature averages around 15° (bearing in mind that the average swimming pool is a toasty 25°) and you’re not allowed to wear a wetsuit. I’m estimating that that the swim will take me around 14 hours. Due to the cold and harsh conditions the success rate for a solo crossing is around 50%[/p][p][br][/p][p]I currently work at Guys and St Thomas Hospital on a ward that specialises in Head and Neck Cancer. I’ve been working as a physiotherapist for the past 5 years and never have I come across a more resilient and inspiring patient group. [/p][p][br][/p][p]These surgeries are so extensive that patients are often left with life long impairments. Simple pleasures such as eating, drinking and speaking are made more difficult and sometimes impossible. I’m blown away by their determination on a daily basis and would love nothing more than to raise just a little bit of money for these incredible people. Funds raised will be going towards developing the service for caring for patients with Head and Neck Cancer here at Guys Hosptial. Through improving patient environment, research, and development of specialist skills for staff. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Every little bit helps and I cannot thank you enough for all your support over the past 18 months. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Sam [/p][p][br][/p]
