My story

[p]I was due to run the London Marathon in April 2018. Sadly my father became very ill early in 2018 and passed away shortly just before Marathon day. I was not feeling in the right place to participate.[/p][p]I now will be dedicating my deferred place in my father's name and have decided to run the 2019 London Marathon on behalf of VICTA, "visually impaired children taking action". My father was very supportive of this charity.[/p][p]The London Marathon is a fantastic event that has helped raise over £3/4 of billion for charities since it was founded in 1981. £54.1 million was raised by runners in the 2015 event alone![/p][p]I hope to take the opportunity of adding to this total during the 2019 event.[/p][p]VICTA is an incredible charity that really makes a difference to the children and young people it supports. These children face many challenges in life and I hope by taking this opportunity to raise as much money as possible for them, I will in some small way be able to make a little positive difference to their lives.[/p][p]VICTA was founded in 1987 by a group of parents who came together to support each other with the day-to-day issues of looking after a visually impaired child. They provided emotional support and worked together to ensure that their children were given the same opportunities as sighted children. [/p][p]Those children have now grown and the original parents wished to ensure that the charity continued so that other parents could have the support which they valued so much. They worked hard to support the charity in its growth and in fundraising, and VICTA is delighted to carry on their work.[/p][p]VICTA organises activities designed to improve the emotional, social and living skills of the children and young people that they support. Bringing children and young people who are blind or partially sighted together to socialise, have fun and travel whether in the UK or abroad helps them to realise just what they can achieve.[/p][p]VICTA also make grants available to enable children and young people to reach their full potential. Whether it is for a Brailler or a computer to help them keep in touch, they want everyone to have the opportunity to learn and grow.[/p][p]Another key initiative is the support for parents and carers. This support is offered via:[/p][p]Advice on issues related to bringing up a child who is blind or partially sighted.[/p][p]Helping parents come to terms with and understanding their child’s eye problem.[/p][p]Providing information and help in respect of how to ensure that they and their children access also statutory support[/p][p]Putting parents in touch with other parents.[/p][p]Directing them to the VICTA parent support network www.throughscarlettseyes.com[/p][p]I am extremely grateful you have taken the time to visit my page and I hope you are able to support me in my goal of completing the London Marathon and raising over £1,400 to support VICTA.[/p]
