My story

[p]Tree of Hope [/p][p]We were inspired by the story of the artist Frida Kahlo and her painting ‘Tree of Hope, Remain Strong’, which resonates with the difficult situation that we find ourselves in with COVID-19 and how we are overcoming it. The painting speaks of challenges and hardships that we will all go through in life, some more than others, but how we can all come through these difficult ordeals stronger. For us at Sam’s Place it offers that message of hope and resilience that we all need right now, so we took that idea from her piece – The Tree of Hope – and have brought it into our charity shop. [/p][p]In the front window of Sam’s Place is a beautiful tree crafted in iron work and sculpted by Dwayne of Bear Metal Industries Ltd, a skilled local craftsman who also made many of the bespoke fixture and fittings for the shop. When we originally commissioned our tree in 2019, it was to illustrate our desire to reach out to the community and raise the profile of the work of Samaritans, in particular the work of our branch Portsmouth and East Hampshire. Judging by the support that we have received locally, we feel we have achieved this, but now our tree will take on a new form… as the centre of our new campaign. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Tree of Hope Campaign [/p][p]Our plan is to cover the currently empty branches of our tree with colourful leaves, each created and produced by our supporters. We want people to focus on the days, weeks and months ahead and the hope that we will start to reach some form of normality in these COVID-19 times. We may not be there yet, but that is where our thoughts for hope will come from.[/p][p]We want our supporters to take this idea and the emotion of hope and create and craft a leaf that represent their idea or message of hope. They can then post these leaves to us and, if they can, donate at the same time via our Virgin Giving page to help us raise money for the Portsmouth and East Hampshire branch Samaritans. We then aim to cover the tree in a myriad of these stunning leaves, each personal, each unique and each taking on their form of hope alongside raising money. [/p][p]We would like it to stand as a community beacon that has been made by those people around us. Our goal is for our supporters snd those that need us to, like Frida Kahlo, feel this hope and that it will help them to remain strong.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Art, Creativity and Mental Health[/p][p]Society is facing a huge public health crisis as the moment with COVID-19 and it is causing huge distress for family, friends and loved ones. those lost will never be forgotten, but in addition this isolation that is completely against our social grain and the inability to continue with a way of life that is so natural to us, has had huge implication for our mental health.[/p][p]Yet art and creativity have and will play an important role in trying to keep us all feeling connected and engaged. Sam’s Place has looked and seen the added value that art and creativity has had on many people’s lives recently and seen the benefit that it can provide. It can have a powerful and long-lasting effect on our mental health and wellbeing, helping to manage it and aid in our recovery.[/p][p]Through art you can express yourself without the barrier that words sometimes erect around our emotions. Sometimes it is impossible to pinpoint these feelings as often our emotions are a dialect unto themselves. Art can be that bridge between language and emotion.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Our hope is that this campaign will bring that creativity to people whilst also supporting the vital work of the Samaritans. With this ‘Create and Donate’ focus, we want people to try and be creative with the feeling of hope in mind. Express yourself in the leaf that you will create for our very own Tree of Hope. As more leaves arrive and are added to its branches, the change will symbolise the changing of seasons and the hope of new life beyond a darker winter.[/p][p][br][/p][p]So be creative with your leaf. Let it show your feeling of hope. Paint, stick, carve, forge, draw or mold. This is for you. Express yourself and enjoy the beneficial creativity of Art.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Leaves and what to do[/p][p]- Make your leaf no larger than 20x20cm.[/p][p]- Your leaf can be made out of any material and decorated however you like, so get creative![/p][p]- Remember to decorate both sides of your leaf.[/p][p]- If you’d like to, you can include your name and/or a message of hope on your leaf[/p][p]- We have 50 wooden templates available on a first-come-first-served basis for those who wish to simply decorate a leaf, rather than make one from scratch - if you’d like to request one please email us at samsplacesouthsea@outlook.com[/p][p]- All donations should be made via the Virgin Money Giving website[/p][p]- All leaves created should be sent either by post or by hand to Sam’s Place, 6 Grove Road South, Southsea, PO5 3QE.[/p][p]- We will acknowledge every leaf we receive by ensuring it is hung on our tree with all others on re-opening.[/p][p] [/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]Sam’s Place and the Samaritans response to COVID-19 [/p][p]The Samaritans has been there throughout the pandemic, providing support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Every seven seconds Samaritans respond to a call for help across the UK, and these calls have increased over the last year, which has included supporting those at the frontline, the NHS. [/p][p][br][/p][p]The Portsmouth and East Hampshire branch of Samaritans is committed to being there throughout the pandemic. In the last year we answered over 22,000 phone calls and responded to 5,500 emails and we will continue to be there. We have over 100 listening volunteers at our branch and they have continued to do their shifts throughout the day and night to be there for anyone struggling to cope - by listening, and in turn giving them hope at that moment in time.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Whilst all Samaritans work on a voluntary basis, the branch still needs to raise funds to pay for their property, technology and internet costs.[/p][p][br][/p][p]“Sam’s Place”, in Southsea, is the local Samaritans Charity Shop that was founded in September 2019 to help provide sustainable and ongoing funding for the Portsmouth and East Hampshire branch. Due to the recent lockdown measures, the shop is currently closed but continues to try and raise funding via online sales.
