My story

[p]In September 2015 Steve and I were at a high point of our lives. We had been married for 21 years and life was good. We were running and cycling together and busy making plans to do more things for us now that our two sons, James and Matt were older. We didn’t realise that our biggest challenge was just around the corner.[/p][p]A month later, a seemingly fit and healthy Steve was admitted to hospital with abdominal pain, which was initially thought to be appendicitis. Events that unfolded over the next few weeks revealed something far worse. [/p][p]On December 18th 2015, the Friday before Christmas we sat together, frightened but still with some hope in the oncology unit at Cheltenham General Hospital. A few hours later all hope disappeared as a tired consultant, with a clinic running over by several hours told us that Steve’s bowel cancer was terminal and had spread to his liver. [/p][p]He smiled wryly and said ‘short shelf life then?’ She didn’t smile back.... ‘yes i’m afraid so’.... ‘how short?’ we asked..... ‘6 months........’ everything after that was a blur, we couldn’t get out of there fast enough, we sat in the car and just cried, thinking about how we would have to break this news to James and Matt. [/p][p]That was the lowest point.[/p][p]Shortly afterwards we discovered Maggies, a little oasis in a beautifully restored house across the the road from the hospital. This building and the wonderful staff and volunteers who worked there became our lifeline over the coming months..... every gruelling chemo was softened by a cup of tea and some kind words over at Maggies. They were always there for both of us in our darkest days. When hope ran out, they gave us space to cry and the wonderful counsellor helped Steve to prepare his goodbyes by writing letters to James and Matt. [/p][p]This is why I am running the London Marathon for Maggies. I could have chosen a charity with a less ambitious fundraising target but Maggies is a place I would want everyone to have access to if ever they were in this situation. [/p][p]Please donate to this amazing charity. Thank you[/p]
