My story

[p]For over 3 years our family has been supported by 2 amazing charities.[/p][p]Let me take a moment to explain, our son Charlie was born with a very major heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome in 2017. This means the left side of his heart never developed properly and Charlie would have to depend on half his heart to live his whole life. [/p][p]Charlie had open heart surgery when he was 3 days old, again 3 1/2 months old and then had a cardiac cathetar operation at 7 months old. This means our son struggles with his energy and tiredness 24/7, his oxygen saturations range from 70%-80%, he has delayed development and he'll never be 'fixed'. Charlie will be undergoing another cardiac cathetar operation on his 3rd birthday and then will be put forward for his 3rd open heart surgery.[/p][p]Without the help and support of Little Hearts Matter we would never have gotten through these tough times. The amount of information and guidance they give you on anything to do with half a heart is amazing! During covid19 this charity has been a godsend sending out information through emails or their Facebook page with updates on how to keep our half a heart children safe. Not only this but they help with everything from sending out information packs when you find out your child will be born with half a heart, to filling out disability allowance applications and even putting on fun days for the teenagers with half a heart. [/p][p]Back to our story... Charlie also received damage to his airway from a breathing tube attached to the ventilator during his 2nd open heart surgery recovery. Subglottic stenosis, this meant that Charlie's airway narrowed and grew scar tissue, and it would be an even bigger effort for Charlie to get oxygen into his body. Charlie struggled for a year and a half, had numerous airway stretch procedures, with us constantly having to monitor him and with him being hospitalised with colds/chest infections frequently. October 2019, when Charlie was 2 years old, he was able to get his airway reconstruction at Glasgow children's hospital. It was an extremely bumpy recovery with a few times we almost lost Charlie, and I can't thank the Glasgow picu team enough! But this brings us onto the 2nd charity I'd like to fundraise for.[/p][p]The Ronald McDonald house Glasgow, we've previously stayed before, but in Oct 2019/Nov 2019 we stayed 6 weeks to be beside Charlie while he was in intensive care. This is completely free for family's but the house solely relys on donations to keep going. It's an actual life saver for parents when their kids are really ill in hospital, without these Ronald Mcdonald houses we'd have to try fund hotel rooms to be close to our son. [/p][p]Myself and close friends plan to do the Fishwives Walk, going from our hometown in Keith roughly 21kms or 13miles to the Moray coastline in Buckie. This is the North East Scotland so weather is very changeable, but we aim to do this one Saturday in August. We will keep you informed of actual date. [/p][p]Please help me give back to theses amazing charities, every little will help. Thank you for reading my story 💙[/p]
