[p]Did you know you have just a 1-in-10 chance of survival if you have an out of hospital sudden cardiac arrest.....SHOCKING I know. Luckily for my younger brother at the age of 39 he was the 1-in-10 but only because of a unique set of circumstances.[/p][p]Almost 1 year ago my brother Craig collapsed whilst at work, no warning, no "I'm not feeling well" and no clutching at the heart. Symptom less, he stopped breathing and had no heartbeat. If Craig had not been given life saving CPR by our other brother Wayne and the ambulance service Craig would have died then and there. The enormity of what had happened came after when the doctors were impressed by the CPR given and had said that without a doubt Craig's life had been saved due to this fact. In fact, it was over 20 minutes of CPR given by Wayne and the Ambulance Crew before Craig's heart started again, this also included using a defibrillator on multiple occasions. [/p][p]So what does this have to do with fundraising.....well.[/p][p]I can not express strongly enough that we should all have the confidence and the knowledge to give somebody life saving CPR. I want to change the 1 in 10 statistic and to do that I would like to raise awareness around CPR and cardiac arrests. I want us to talk about it, I want you to check where your nearest defibrillator is and I want you to know that doing something is better than doing nothing. [/p][p]So I'm walking, starting on Friday 11th September (1 year to the day of Craig's incident), this will be the first of my walks or climbs over the next 11 months and this will be 22.5 miles along the coast from Filey to Robin Hoods Bay. Anybody can join in, in fact I would love the company, but most importantly I'm asking you to read my posts, follow the links I provide and get educated.[/p][p] - Cardiac arrest is different to a heart attack. Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem and the person will be unconscious. Heart attack is a circulation problem and the person will probably be conscious.[/p][p] - For every minute your heart is not pumping your chances of survival decrease by 10% and the very sad reality is that if you do not get help within minutes you will die. [/p][p] - Starting immediate CPR is vital as it keeps blood and oxygen circulating to the brain and around the body.[/p][p]I would love to also raise some money for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service who not only gave life saving CPR to Craig but also because they fund projects which are above and beyond that funded by the NHS. Their aim is to save more lives by enabling EVERYONE to respond to a medical emergency in the appropriate way, having a strong focus on cardiac survival. And also the British Heart Foundation so they can continue their amazing work with all things related to your heart.[/p][p]Thanks for reading, Love you loads[/p][p]Sarah[/p][p]#letschangethe1in10 #doyouknowcpr #savealife #1in10[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
