My story

[p]I am married to a Trawlerman and we have two Under 10 metre inshore boats that fish out of Brixham. Having been involved within the fisheries welfare sector for some years and now working as a lawyer at Hassall Law Marine & Property Solicitors in Kingsbridge, South Devon, I know all too l well the many difficulties faced by the inshore fishing fleet. [/p][p]Very recently I have become the Secretary for the Coastal Producers' Organisation, a Cooperative Fish Producers Organisation, and am very mindful of how an individual can join forces with others, to take many small steps to achieve larger positive outcomes for the industry as a whole. It is for this reason that I have accepted a place only a few days ago, after the Covid 19 national emergency measures were introduced, to support Seafarers UK, a vital Seafaring charity that cascades funds through a number of smaller charities that support many seafarers organisations, including those related to fishermen and their families. [/p][p]I am not a natural runner and found the London Marathon I completed two years ago for Seafarers UK very difficult and I am sure that this year, with the restriction on outside movement, will be even harder. It will be nothing compared to the difficulties and worry that many inshore fishermen are currently facing with the inability to sell their catch due to lower prices and a market place that has collapsed for many due to restricted movement of landings. [/p][p]At the time of creating this page in March 2020, there is currently no government system or policy in place to support the self employed share fisherman from the financial difficulties currently being faced or the uncertainty of what is to come. [/p][p]Please give generously to my Virgin Money Giving page to support all Seafarers around the UK who were navigating difficult waters as it is with all that comes with Brexit, without the now very real prospects of exceptional hardship through the inability to sell the fish that they catch. We are in unchartered waters from an industry perspective and whilst we are to a certain extent all in the same boat (excuse the pun), the outlook for the fishermen at this point of time for the smaller inshore fleet looks particularly precarious without the government support that has yet to be introduced for the self employed. [/p][p]Please give generously to Seafarers UK to enable them to support those within the industry who need the assistance the most. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you.
