My story

[p]As a Dentist, I've chosen to run this years New York Marathon and raise money for a charity close to my heart, the Dental Wellness Trust. [/p][p]In the UK in 2017/18, there were over 38,000 tooth extractions under general anaesthetic in children due to tooth decay – equivalent to 13 full school buses each week. That's around 60,000 days of school missed during the year for hospital tooth extractions; parents and carers may also have to take time off work. The vast majority of those kids likely had pain, infections, swollen faces, needed antibiotics missed school, couldn't eat and many will likely be teased by their friends for having missing or decayed teeth.[/p][p]This is not to mention the serious risks that a general anaesthetic has which can include death.[/p][p]In large this is down to parents not brushing their kids teeth or supporting them to do so from an early age as well as consumption of excessive amounts of sugary foods and drinks - it bordering on neglect by allowing our kids to be exposed to such problems and more needs to be done.[/p][p]The Dental Wellness Trust is doing its part to help reduce these shocking figures by training schools, teachers, caregivers and childminders to provide supervised toothbrushing programmes in class as well as oral health education workshops to kids, parents and teachers.[/p][p]All money raised goes to providing resources for these programmes from toothbrushes, toothpaste to hands on education materials.[/p][p]I am personally responsible for providing the training in the UK and so can see exactly how every penny raised is helping to make a difference for these kids who are often not given the best start in life, for reasons far beyond their control.[/p][p]Any support is greatly appreciated.[/p]
