My story

[p]On the 25th July our lives turned into darkness when my son Tom on his motorcycle had a head on collision with a car, he was taken to Southampton general hospital with serious head injuries where he was treated and cared for by the ICU unit, all totally in shock, myself and the rest of the family were put in to a nightmare, this horrific storm lasted 11 days and nights where we had to look at Tom’s smashed up body in a coma with wires and tubes all over it, and watching the machines and monitors bleeping away, all we could do was pray for him, hold his hand, talk to him, give him love and energy, play his favorite music and watch the staff care for him. Without this unit we would certainly of lost him, the storm has passed and the sun is starting to shine through and Tom now has been moved to a neurological ward and is still receiving great care, he has made such progress he is now eating and drinking by himself and being able to stand alone and he is taking small steps which is all in the right direction. I will be forever grateful to all the staff at the unit for saving my sons life, and I have made it my mission to raise as much money for them. To start the fundraising, I'm going to do a Red devil skydive which I will be paying for the sky dive myself, so all monies raised go to the unit. I've set my fundraising target at £5000 but I would love to exceed this amount. So, come on guys please help me achieve this target for this fantastic unit that we are all so lucky to have on our doorstep, please donate as little or as much as you can, Many thanks Shane Bird x[/p][p]UPDATE ON TOM: Tom is doing really well and is home from hospital, his progress is amazing and we are all so proud of his determination to get better. We are all so thankful to the centre for giving us our Tom back.[/p][p]Skydive: The date is to finalized and it be in May 2020 so still plenty of time to continue to donate.[/p][p]Smile4Wessex raises money for research and works to ensure the neurosurgeons and specialists at the centre have access to the latest technology to help to provide emergency treatment, as well as continued treatment and support to patients with long-term conditions. There are only 34 neurosciences centres around the UK, The centre often gets asked the question, “Shouldn’t equipment and facilities funded by Smile4Wessex in fact be provided by the NHS?” In an ideal world the answer would of course be yes, but in the real world that simply cannot happen as there will always be compromises to make over demands for new technologies, new drugs, and for larger facilities staffed by more doctors and nurses.[/p][p][br][/p]
