My story

[p]Team Ben Hammond is a fundraising group based near Tenterden in Kent raising funds and awareness for local heart screening events for young people between the ages of 14 & 35 yrs.[/p][p]In July 2016 15 year old Ben Hammond from High Halden died from an undiagnosed heart condition. This was sudden, unexpected and there were no symptoms or warnings. Ben was fit, healthy and very active, he loved the outdoors and had a real passion for farming. It is difficult to believe that such an active teenage boy could die of a condition which showed absolutely no symptoms. Many of these conditions can often be picked up by heart screening, but this service is not offered on the NHS.[/p][p]Working closely with the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) they have set up a memorial account where all funds raised go towards funding screening days which are carried out by CRY. A screening day costs £5000 and 100 young people can be screened in this time[/p][p]Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. Since its formation in 1995, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). CRY supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by YSCD. CRY promotes and develops heart screening programmes and funds medical research. CRY publishes and distributes medical information written by leading cardiologists for the general public. CRY funds specialist referral, screening and cardiac pathology services at leading UK hospitals.[/p]
