My story

[p]HELPING BREADLINE AFRICA FUND A NEW CLASSROOM AT IZIBONELE EDUCARE CENTRE. [/p][p]During last year's lockdown, a winter rainstorm caused the church wall to collapse and fall onto Izibonele Educare Centre in Cape Town, South Africa. Sharon and Martin are running the 2021 Virtual London Marathon to raise much-needed funds to provide a 12m converted shipping container classroom for the centre. A new classroom will go a long way towards restoring their pre-school and giving the children their own comfortable, safe space for learning. [/p][p][br][/p][p]ABOUT SHARON & MARTIN[/p][p]Martin has been a competitive runner and hurdler in his youth and then switched to being a coach of world-class athletes. Martin has run the London Marathon before. Sharon has walked and run seven marathons including London and New York. [/p][p]"We are pleased to be engaging in the London Virtual Marathon together and will be using the Thames in Buckinghamshire as a pivotal point of our start and finish, walking the banks of the river and the nearby woodlands to complete the marathon distance."[/p][p][br][/p][p]ABOUT OUR CAUSE:[/p][p]Breadline Africa, the biggest supplier of converted shipping containers for poverty relief in Southern Africa, has provided 700 containers to resource-poor communities and plans to bring this total to 1,000 in the next three years, benefiting more than 250,000 children. The renovated containers are used as early childhood development centres (pre-schools – providing educational support to children between the ages of one and six years), school libraries to promote literacy, and community kitchens and toilet blocks. Particular attention is given to rural and under-resourced communities.[/p][p]Availability of quality pre-schools that provide an environment where children can be prepared for primary school is one of the most effective means of breaking the cycle of poverty in South Africa. A comprehensive pre-school also includes a kitchen for staff to prepare healthy, nutritious meals for the children and connected water-borne toilets to improve hygiene and sanitation for the children and teachers alike.[/p][p]Breadline Africa believes that every child deserves a better future and a chance to escape the cycle of poverty through educational opportunities.[/p][p]In addition, Breadline Africa supports:[/p][p]· Emergency feeding programmes in poor communities to alleviate hunger.[/p][p]· Various initiatives for children and their families, including food parcel drives, outings and educational events.[/p][p]Breadline Africa is also registered with the UK Charities Commission.
