My story

[p]Callum and I are running the Vitality half marathon on the 25th April in aid of the RASASC. We would like to raise awareness of rape and sexual abuse which is a particularly difficult subject contemplate or discuss. Hopefully by raising awareness and opening up a discussion we can help those affected to heal.[/p][p]Sexual abuse can have devastating effects and last a lifetime.[/p][p]•anxiety and depression[/p][p]•eating disorder[/p][p]•post-traumatic stress[/p][p]•difficulty coping with stress[/p][p]•self-harm[/p][p]•suicidal thoughts and suicide[/p][p]•sexually transmitted infections[/p][p]•pregnancy[/p][p]•feelings of shame and guilt[/p][p]•drug and alcohol problems[/p][p]•relationship problems with family, friends and partners.[/p][p][br][/p][p]We can overcome these issues by supporting The Rape and Sexual Assault Centre, based in Guildford, it is the only charity of its kind in Surrey. They support women, men and young people affected by rape or sexual abuse, whether recently or in the past.[/p][p]Their aim is to help survivors overcome the abuse they have experienced and to rebuild their lives. [/p][p]The charity achieves this through a helpline, community outreach, counselling and also provides independent sexual violence advisors to support young people.[/p][p]•Sexual abuse is a hidden crime that happens across race, religion, class and causes devastating lifetime effects.[/p][p]•93% of abuse is perpetrated by our family, friends, and community. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused [/p][p]•Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence report to the police[/p][p]•Approximately 90% of those who are raped know the perpetrator prior to the offence [/p][p]•Conviction rates for rape are far lower than other crimes, with only 5.7% of reported rape cases ending in a conviction for the perpetrator.[/p][p]Thank you for taking time to read about this difficult subject any donations will be gratefully appreciated.[/p][p]Lots of Love [/p][p]Sharon and Callum [/p]
