My story

[p]Hi all,[/p][p]As you may or may not remember, back in 2018 I impulsively decided to enter the ballot for the 2019 London Marathon, despite nearly 20 years of zero exercise.[/p][p]As the reality of this sunk in, I was comforted when regularly told how unlikely it was that I’d actually get a place. Everyone seemed to know someone who had applied 4 or 5 years in a row but still hadn’t won a place. Phew![/p][p]Early October and the results are due any day. I’ve not started exercising yet, no need as I won’t be getting a place anyway.[/p][p]October 2018, an email from the organisers, no doubt to decline my application. Only they seem to have made a mistake……. ‘Congratulations, your application has been accepted’. Oh $#!+, what have I done?[/p][p]Ever since I have been training. Running 3 times a week, starting with a ‘couch to 5k’ program and getting knackered after 1 minute, but improving slowly (very slowly), eventually getting to 5k, pushing further, running a 10k, completing a half marathon (13 miles), still a long way to go but improving every week. I’m not going to win any awards for speed, but i'm getting there and on track with the training. Just one month to go and then.....[/p][p]Aargh! Who put that door there? Apparently toes aren't meant to point in that direction (see photo's below, and yes I do have beautiful hairy feet!). It's broken and dislocated, and the doctors have assured me that I cannot run in just 4 weeks time....aargh again![/p][p]At least I can defer my place for a year so I will now be running the 2020 London Marathon, another year to get fit, a silver lining perhaps and surely nothing else will go wrong in 2020 :)[/p][p]Clearly 2020 hasn't quite gone to plan for anyone. From a marathon perspective, after weeks of training up to half marathon distance again the April date was postponed until October. Then after more weeks of training for the October date it was announced that it would be run virtually from home instead. This will make it even tougher without the crowds encouragement, clear route to run and regular water stations etc. We do however get to run both this virtual race and also defer to another year's race....so i'll be running in London 2021 too![/p][p]For this year's virtual race, on Oct 4th i'll be running the 26.2 miles through the local villages surrounding Ampthill, albeit slower than planned due to various injuries picked up in recent weeks including a groin strain that clearly needs resting. Despite my body seemingly giving up, I'll get the distance covered somehow.[/p][p]So, where do you come in?[/p][p]I’m raising money for the British Heart Foundation, in memory of my Father-in-Law Michael. They fund over £100million of research each year into heart and circulatory diseases and the things that cause them. Heart diseases. Stroke. Vascular dementia. Diabetes. Research has given us machines that can restart hearts, the ability to fix arteries in tiny babies, the power to give someone a heart they weren’t born with, and so much more.[/p][p]But heart and circulatory diseases still kill 1 in 4 in the UK, they cause heartbreak on every street. And that’s why their work is as urgent and vital as ever.[/p][p]Please give all you can, and enjoy laughing at the prospect of my struggle :)[/p]
