Team story

[p]Shoot For The Moon is brought to you by the same team that runs The On-Call Room Facebook forum for doctors across the UK (8.2k members and growing).[/p][p]A multidisciplinary team of NHS staff will walk, run, cycle, swim, row the distance to the moon: 238900 miles in total, from February 1st to April 30th, hoping to turn #MilesIntoSmiles.[/p][p]Background[/p][p]Public support for the NHS has been amazing. Discounts, food to motivate tired workers and #ClapForCarers. However, as a group, we recognise that we are very fortunate to have had financial security over the last 10 months, unlike many of the public, some of whom are now sadly venting their lockdown frustrations against NHS staff.[/p][p]We know NHS workers are increasingly struggling to maintain positive spirit. We’ve all seen it. The huge emotional and physical toll on so many frontline doctors looking after COVID patients. [/p][p]The aims of our challenge [/p][p]1) To improve our mental wellbeing by increasing our physical activity, getting endorphins going, and work together as a team outside of work, rather than many going home alone.[/p][p]2) To simultaneously raise money for four charitable organisations that support the greater good of those affected during the pandemic, particularly those affected by lockdown.[/p][p]The charities we are supporting[/p][p]- Age UK: It has been an exceptionally lonely Christmas for many of our older population, due to isolation and loss of loved ones to COVID. Befriending, telephone services and care in the community are key parts of their role in ensuring no elderly person feels alone. www.ageuk.org.uk[/p][p]- MIND: Provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. www.mind.org.uk[/p][p]- CALM: The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide. Every week 125 people in the UK take their own lives. And 75% of all UK suicides are male. They provide frontline services, support communities and campaign to help those with mental health challenges. www.calmzone.net[/p][p]- The Mix UK: Helping the under 25s, from mental health to money, from homelessness to finding a job, from break-ups to drugs. Offering counselling, helping ambassador voices grow and supporting those impacted by racism. www.themix.org.uk[/p][p]Are you an NHS worker, key worker or have been fortunate to keep working during the pandemic? [/p][p]Can we ask you to kindly donate (as all our participants have) to these four charities? Even the smallest of amounts such as 99p, but whatever you can offer would be gratefully received by these charities that will also have suffered the effects of lockdown.[/p][p]We want to help the public understand that we will go to the moon (and back) to help our patients, above and beyond our daily work. So now it’s our turn to give back to those who are suffering, to help flatten the curve and relieve the burden on the NHS. NHS staff recognise the consequences of lockdown on people’s livelihoods and mental health, and in our own small way, we want to thank those that still persist in following national lockdown guidance despite understandable waning enthusiasm.[/p][p]Please help us Shoot For The Moon by going #MilesForSmiles.[/p][p]Thank you.[/p][p](Profile pic artwork by The.Rebel.Bear)[/p]
