My story

[p]Hi everyone,[/p] [p]I am going to be running in the 2016 London Marathon on the 24th April. I am raising money for Alzheimer's Research UK.[/p] [p]My family, like many across the country, has been affected by dementia. My father has Alzheimer’s disease. Memory loss is the commonest symptom but others include changes in behaviour, confusion and disorientation. It affects 44 million people worldwide and is now the UKs leading cause of death in women.[/p] [p]It's extremely difficult to watch someone special change and be powerless to stop it, both professionally and personally. My family have lived with the condition and care for my father to the best of our abilities. There is great support and expertise from local specialist clinics and units, national and local groups and from other families in the same situation. However, and this is the important part, there is [span=text-decoration: underline;]no cure[/span].[/p] [p]Alzheimer's Research UK needs our support to help patients and families in the future. This can only be achieved with dedicated research into the condition and trialling new drugs and treatments. In the meantime, we continue to support our loved ones through the challenges ahead.[/p] [p]I want to raise as much as I can but have pledged a minimum of £2,000. This will be my first London marathon and I am honoured to run for Alzheimer’s Research UK. [/p] [p]Thank you all for your generosity to a very worthy charity.[/p] [p]Dr Simon Phillips[/p][p][/p][p]If you or someone you know would like more information about dementia, make an appointment to see your GP or visit the Alzheimers Research UK website at www.alzheimersresearchuk.org or telephone 0300 111 5333.[/p][p][/p]
