My story

[p]I am now planning to run the Marathon des Sables in September; the event will no longer be taking place in April due to the coronavirus, so six more months of training - hooray![/p][p]The Marathon des Sables involves running 156 miles (six marathons) in six days, across the Sahara Desert in southern Morocco and I have foolishly agreed to take part.[/p][p]The race will now start on Sunday 20th September. I have to carry my own food and equipment for the entire six days in temperatures regularly reaching 50 centigrade. The long stage of 52 miles on days four and five is the most daunting, involving running through the day and into the night. All costs will be met by me personally. [/p][p]I am taking part in this madness to raise funds for those with spinal injury and particularly a colleague and friend of mine from Downside School, where I teach. Rob Butt was Head of the History Department at Downside until a tragic accident in Malta left him paralysed from the neck down and completely dependent on others for the most basic things we take for granted. Rob is currently confined to home, but with your generous support I plan to raise funds to provide Rob with an outdoor wheelchair and an exoskeleton for his right arm. Rob will be able to take his dog for a walk for the first time. Rob will also be able to raise a glass or cup to his mouth without relying on someone to hold it for him. [/p][p]I know that sponsorship requests are commonplace, but this is a very worthwhile cause and any money that you do donate will be put to excellent use through Southern Spinal Injuries Trust (SSIT). SSIT raises money to help people living with spinal cord injury in the South and South West of England. At least 50% of the money raised will be made available to purchase equipment for Rob, with the balance helping others in a similar predicament. You can donate here, or if you prefer, donations can be made by cheque or bank transfer direct to SSIT at Natwest, sort 54-41-19, account 47647299.[/p][p]Thank you in advance for any donations big or small! I will keep you updated on my training and progress and (hopefully...) the successful completion of this terrifying but worthwhile challenge.[/p]
