My story

[p]Thank you for visiting my fundraising for Diabetes page.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Myself and my friend Mark Evans are going to be running the length of Wales for charity starting on the 6th September 2021. We have secured places at the world’s toughest mountain race, the ‘Dragon’s Back’ (www.dragonsbackrace.com)! This means we have +400kms of running and +57k feet (twice the height of Everest!) of climbing ahead of us over every single mountain in Wales. Across 6 days, we’ll hopefully run from Conway Castle in the North to Cardiff Castle in the South![/p][p][br][/p][p]The background and inspiration for this challenge is my 7 year old son, Ethan! He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2020 which has had a huge impact on his life. Whilst he has been incredibly brave in tackling all challenges which the disease throws his way on an hourly basis: hypo’s, hyper’s, feeling sick or dizzy, fingertip ‘blood’ tests and 4 insulin injections per day every day, he remains a happy, smiley and positive little boy! To let him know how brave he is, and to help others like Ethan, Mark and myself are going to be running the length of Wales to raise important funds which will be shared equally across the following charities:[/p][p]Diabetes UK (www.diabetes.org.uk/) - Diabetes UK’s mission is to tackle diabetes, day in and day out, until it can do no harm. They are changing policies and attitudes through their hard-hitting campaigns. They fund ground-breaking research and support everyone affected by diabetes, they won’t rest until we find a cure.[/p][p]The Paediatrics Diabetes Team (PDT) at the Children’s Ward in Stoke Mandeville Hospital (SMH) of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (Children's Ward - Ward 3 - Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (buckshealthcare.nhs.uk)) - from day one when Ethan was admitted to SMH, the ongoing support that they have been providing is simply amazing! Our funds will be allocated to Fund 2063 and will go towards helping children that require support from this brilliant unit.[/p][p]St Andrew's Church of England Primary School in Chinnor (St Andrew's Church of England Primary School (st-andrews.oxon.sch.uk)) - funds raised will go towards the important ongoing development of the outdoor space at Ethan’s school. This space is being designed to focus on the wellbeing and development of all of the children right across the school.[/p][p][br][/p][p]We would also love to secure for Ethan a Dragon race ‘finisher’s trophy’, awarded to everyone who finishes the race. The race has a very low percentage of runners who start the race actually finishing it, so it’s going to be a massive test of physical and mental endurance. So alongside raising funds for the brilliant organisations above, we will be aiming to secure a Dragon trophy to let him know how brave he is and how proud everyone is as to how well he is coping with this tough, tough disease![/p][p][br][/p][p]Mark and myself understand just how challenging the last year or so has been for us all, but please can we ask if you and / or your company would be so very kind as to sponsor us for the run by donating money on this page.[/p][p][br][/p][p]We are trying to increase the profile of what we are doing so any help you can provide in promoting the link is very gratefully received and appreciated![/p][p][br][/p][p]Finally, every single penny which we raise will be going to these amazing charities, so a huge thank you in advance for any contribution you can make, it is truly appreciated by everyone connected here and by Mark and myself.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Best[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]Simon Pollard[/p][p]Mark Evans[/p]
