My story

[lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt]Last May, I trekked the Inca Trail in Peru in memory of my dad, Brian, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2012. I raised almost £3500 for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund in doing so. [/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt]This year, my intention had been to scale Kilimanjaro. But then, I decided that I wanted an even greater challenge...something to [b]really [/b]test me.[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt]So, in September 2015, I will be climbing four volcanoes as I make my way across the Ecuadorian Andes. My main challenge will be to climb Cotopaxi, which is the highest active volcano on the planet at an elevation of 19,347ft. The final push to the summit will take around 8 hours, using ice axes, ropes and crampons to climb a glacier with 40 degree inclines. [/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt]This time around I'm raising money for Pancreatic Cancer Action. As ever, I'm raising money in memory of my father -[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=letter-spacing: 0px; background-color: transparent;]Quiet, mischievous, witty, intelligent and kind. That was the Brian I knew and loved. That was my dad. He liked fishing, rugby, snooker, Cardiff City FC, playing cards, chocolate raisins, pints of bitter (but only in a glass with a handle), and black and white films. He read to me for hours on end when I was little, helped me ride my bike without stabilisers, taught me how to play chess, showed me the finer points of gin rummy and poker (and more importantly, how to always win!), and introduced me to the films of Laurel & Hardy, Alfred Hitchcock and David Cronenberg, amongst other things. I miss him every single day. [/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;]In the prime of his life with so many things to look forward to, my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. [lt]span[gt]He took the news on the chin, shrugged his shoulders and carried on with his crossword. [/span]Just a few weeks later, he passed away, having been given no hope of survival whatsoever. Amidst the pain and indignity of dying in such a cruel way, he never once complained, and just got on with it, as he always did. [lt]/span[gt][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt]-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=color: #ff0000; letter-spacing: 0px; background-color: transparent;]Some facts about this deadly disease - [/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;][lt]span style="color: #ff0000;"[gt]* 8000 people in the UK are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year. It is the fifth most common cause of cancer death but attracts just 1% of overall cancer funding. [/span][lt]/span[gt][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;][lt]span style="color: #ff0000;"[gt]* Only 3% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive. Compare this to 95% of those with testicular cancer or 80% of those with breast cancer. Survival rates for people with pancreatic cancer have barely improved in half a century. [/span][lt]/span[gt][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;][lt]span style="color: #ff0000;"[gt]* There is no early detection test for pancreatic cancer, and the symptoms are vague. By the time the disease presents itself, it is usually too late. The average survival time after diagnosis is six months. Brian had six weeks. [/span][lt]/span[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][/p][lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;][lt]span style="color: #ff0000;"[gt][lt]img style="vertical-align: middle;" title="Trends in cancer survival " src="https://pancreaticcanceraction.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Trends-in-cancer-survival-by-tumour-site-1971_2011.png" alt="Trends in cancer survival " width="450" height="257" /[gt][/span][lt]/span[gt][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;]--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[/span][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px;"[gt]Tawel, direidus, ffraeth, deallus a charedig. Hwn yw’r pumed achos mwyaf cyffredin o farwolaethau cancr, ac 1% yn unig o’r ariannu ar gyfer cancr mae’n ei dderbyn. [/span][lt]/span[gt][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;][lt]span style="color: #ff0000;"[gt]* Dim ond 3% o’r rhai sy’n cael eu canfod yn dioddef sy’n byw pum mlynedd neu fwy. Cymharwch hyn gyda’r 95% o’r rhai â chancr y ceilliau neu’r 80% o’r rhai â chancr y fron. Prin mae cyfradd goroesiad pobl â chancr y pancreas wedi gwella mewn hanner canrif. [/span][lt]/span[gt][/p] [lt]p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 12px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #4d4840; font-family: Helvetica;"[gt][span=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;][lt]span style="color: #ff0000;"[gt]* Does dim modd canfod cancr y pancreas yn gynnar ac mae’r symptomau yn aneglur. Erbyn i’r clefyd amlygu’i hun, mae hi fel arfer yn rhy hwyr. Cyfartaledd goroesiad claf ar ôl canfod y clefyd yw chwe mis. Chwech wythnos gafodd Brian. [/span][lt]/span[gt][/p] [lt]div[gt][span=margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;][lt]span style="color: #ff0000;"[gt][lt]br /[gt][/span][lt]/span[gt][lt]/div[gt]
