Team story

[p]Hi, thanks for visiting our page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p][p]We will be taking part in an event on 1st June, where we will run 12km, cycle 40km, canoe 10km and find some time for a bit of bagpipe playing in the process! (Ok the last bit isn't actually true)[/p][p]So why put ourselves through this? Quite simply to raise funds for a wonderful couple of charities – CHICKS and St Lukes Hospice, Plymouth[/p][p]About CHICKS[/p][p]We know that childhood can be a difficult experience if you are having a tough time at home. At CHICKS we provide week long respite breaks for disadvantaged children from across the UK, who would not otherwise have a break in that year.[/p][p]In 2012, just over 1,100 children enjoyed a break with CHICKS, but this just wasn't enough. This year we aim to take 1,200 children. More than ever before![/p][p]The children we support come from a variety of backgrounds – those living in poverty, children that are being neglected or abused, either mentally, physically or sexually, children who have lost parents or even children who are full time young carers.[/p][p]Whilst the UK is in a tough economic climate the demand for respite care has grown and we live by our own signature - giving children the Gift of Hope, teaching children that they can achieve anything and reach what may seem like impossible goals. With no government funding and relying solely on donations this is a big challenge![/p][p]About St Lukes:[/p][p]A Hospice is all about living and achieving the best possible quality of life for every single moment.  We support our patients and their carers, aiming at all times to improve the quality of life remaining. At St Luke's we share the ethos of the late Dame Cicely Saunders, the founder of the modern hospice movement:[lt]br /[gt][lt]br /[gt]‘You matter because you are you. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can to help you not only to die peacefully, but also to live until you die’[lt]br /[gt][lt]br /[gt]We aim to provide high quality specialist Palliative Care that is tailored as far as possible to the individual needs of the people who are our patients.  Such care seeks to be holistic in nature, acknowledging that patients facing a life limiting illness have not only physical symptoms but also emotional, spiritual and social needs.  We will do all we can to involve patients in decisions about their care, to maintain privacy and dignity in providing that care, and to respect patients’ individual rights and religious and cultural beliefs.[/p]
