[p]Small-Steps Charity is launching an urgent appeal to fundraise for MAHAN Trust in Melghat Tribal Area of India, to support their COVID efforts. MAHAN Trust has been providing hospital based and community-based services to the under-privileged tribal population of Melghat, India for 23 years. SSC have been supporting the Trust over the past 2 years to help improve healthcare to this part of India by funding malnutrition projects. Small-Steps Charity is a registered charity (Reg Number 1157097) which raises funds for health and education projects through sporting activities, including cycling.[/p][p][b]We are looking to fund the following for Mahan Trust’s COVID efforts:[/b][/p][p] [b][i]Emergency Equipment for Hospital care[/i][/b][/p][p]a.[u] Oxygen Concentrators[/u] - x 10 - This is to support the sudden influx of COVID patients that need oxygen support.[/p][p]b. [u]Electrical Stabiliser+UPS+Inverter[/u] - To provide constant electrical supply for vital electrical ITU equipment such as ventilators and concentrators.[/p][p]c. [u]Air purifiers + Ventilatory equipment for ICU[/u].[/p][p] [b][i]COVID management in community[/i][/b][/p][p]a. [u]Pulse Oximeters x 70[/u] - To allow trained Nurses and Village Health Workers manage milder cases in the community.[/p][p]b. [u]Rapid Antigen Testing Kits[/u] - Getting the disease under control in a remote area is challenging and screening villagers is crucial in the short term.[/p][p]Mahan Trust is expanding their ICU facilities to 15 oxygen beds and planning to conduct a community control program in 30 villages. This will benefit a population of over 30000 population. [/p][p][b]We have so far provided some urgent help to MAHAN:[/b][/p][p]A. [u]Virtual Ward Rounds -[/u] The daily management of seriously unwell and ventilated patients is being aided by a one-on-one Virtual WR set-up with an Intensive Care Specialist. This is providing much needed specialist advice, enhanced care and support for the team in MAHAN.[/p][p]B. [u]Emergency Funds:[/u] We have released emergency funds (£3500) from SSC to help purchase vital equipment that is needed asap.[/p][p][b] [/b][/p][p][b] [/b][/p][p][b] [/b][/p][p][b]Melghat, MAHAN and Covid-19:[/b][/p][p]Covid-19, has had a devastating effect in the tribal areas of India, where access to healthcare has been challenging even before the Pandemic. A survey by IIT Delhi last year suggested 3% of the tribal population were infected. Now the prevalence of Covid-19 has nearly trebled. In Melghat there were no facilities for the treatment of serious Covid-19 cases. MAHAN Trust has started treating Covid-19 patients since March 2020; the hospital has treated more than 440 serious patients in ICU and 118 confirmed cases. These include severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients and respiratory failure patients on Ventilators, NIV and Bipap.[/p][p][b] [/b][/p][p][b]Covid-19 relief work undertaken by MAHAN thus far[/b][/p][p]• Free supply of local therapeutic food (LTF) daily to the tribal population, including [gt]740 pregnant women and 500 children aged under five.
