Team story

[p]Donations via this page are sent directly to our charities and are not used to fund the trip.[/p][p]ABOUT[/p][p]In December 2021, John-Kenneth D Habbershaw and Courtney W Hollyoake (two friends and retired emergency service volunteers) will undertake an unassisted 3000-mile voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in a tiny 17ft sailing boat to raise money in aid of their four favourite charities. [/p][p]This page has been set up specifically to help raise funds and pass them directly to our chosen charities. Donations on this page will be split evenly between our listed charities. Any donations to this page will not be used towards the costs of the voyage.[/p][p]If you donate £5 or more, we'll include your name printed on the boat hull as part of Poppet's 'Sofa To Sailboat' logo![/p][p]THE ADVENTURE[/p][p][gt] The 3000-mile crossing will be east to west from the Canary Islands to Antigua.[/p][p][gt] The boat will average 3.5 knots per hour (4mph), a fast walking pace.[/p][p][gt] The trip across the Atlantic will take about 30-35 days.[/p][p][gt] The largest waves can measure up to 20ft-40ft high – That is higher than the boat mast![/p][p][gt] At its deepest, the Atlantic Ocean is 5.28 miles (8.5km) deep! There is no toilet on board – the crew will use a bucket![/p][p]THE BOAT[/p][p][gt] ‘Poppet’ is an early MK1 ‘Leisure 17’ made from fibreglass by Cobramould in Essex. The boat is around 50 years old. ‘Poppet' measures just 17ft (5.2m) long – that’s smaller than a Ford Transit van![/p][p][gt] The boat fully provisioned will weigh about 850kg. That is about half the weight of a large family car.[/p][p][gt] John Adam sailed his L17 'Eve' across the Atlantic in 1969. He was arrested and briefly imprisoned in Cuba on suspicion of being a spy![/p][p]HOW ELSE CAN I HELP?[/p][p][gt] Get involved with some of the fundraising events which are being planned.[/p][p][gt] The costs of preparing the boat, equipment, extra safety training, and logistics will cost near to £50,000 on top of our fundraising. 23% of the fit-out budget has already been personally spent by the crew or from sponsored/donated equipment, but there is still a long way to go! If you would like to donate or sponsor specialist equipment, please contact us or visit the following fundraising page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/sofatosailboat[/p][p]OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUR BUSINESS / BRAND[/p][p]We can promote your business/brand on the SofaToSailboat website and on our social media accounts. Our social media strategy has already begun; there will be regular postings of project updates on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. This will be during the fit-out, training/practice, during and after the voyage.[/p][p]The possibility of having your Sponsorship/Logos/Brand featured on the fundraising material and the vessel.[/p][p]SofaToSailboat hopes to get the boat physically featured on display at boat shows, yacht clubs, regattas, maritime festivals, county events, local schools and businesses.[/p][p]We can deliver Talks and Presentations to your employees, club members, students etc.[/p][p]Show that your brand cares about the charities, organisations, and ethos that SofaToSailboat is promoting.[/p][p]FURTHER INFORMATION: www.sofatosailboat.co.uk[/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zJ3tkWbfnm0?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3" nuan_newframe="true"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p]
