My story

[p]Calling all friends and supporters of Assist RR UK & IMHO USA[/p][p]A team of Solihull School staff, pupils and parents - past and present - are raising funds to save the sight of more than 1000 of Sri Lanka’s poorest people and we would be very grateful for your support. [/p][p]People who are destined to become irreversibly blind in one or both eyes without the cataract surgeries they themselves have no hope of affording or accessing.[/p][p]Cataract surgeries for £30[/p][p]With the support of our charity partnership, you can fund their sight saving operations for £30 ($40 or 7500 LKR) per surgery – safeguarding the independence they need to continue doing the things that are most important in their lives; such as continuing to earn a living, caring for children or grandchildren, cooking for themselves, reading their holy book, moving freely without the aid of another person or simply seeing the faces of their loved ones. See short video linked here re a similar initiative in Bangladesh: [/p][p] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh-VerZWet0&t=35s)[/p][p]Through a network of medical professionals, district officials and charity volunteers we have been fortunate to work with over a number of years, we have in place the expertise to organise all aspects of multiple Cataract Surgery Camps in Vavuniya, benefiting the poorest people across the North and East of Sri Lanka. [/p][p]All we need now is your support to make it happen, so please donate.[/p][p]Free use of medical facilities[/p][p]We asked Dr V Sarveswaran, Chairman of Assist RR (http://assistrr.org/), for his support. The charity has previously funded and facilitated circa 4000 cataract surgeries across Sri Lanka and has extensive logistical experience to offer. Assist RR has pledged its full support in all aspects of the initiative, including extending this appeal to its supporters and paving the way for the free use of medical facilities in Vavuniya.[/p][p]Fundraising matching pledge[/p][p]We approached the Board of IMHO USA (https://theimho.org/) for their support and we are hugely grateful to them for offering to circulate this appeal on our behalf and to match everything you donate, up to $20,000. This paves the way for us to fund 1000+ cataract surgeries, if we can raise $20,000 (circa £15,000) with your help.[/p][p]For those who would like to make US $ donations*, you can do so via our IMHO USA page here:[/p][p]https://theimho.org/the-penney-family-and-team-solihull-want-to-raise-funds-for-over-1000-cataract-surgeries/[/p][p]* As IMHO USA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (federal tax ID# 59-3779465), all donations are tax-deductible for US tax payers.[/p][p]Gift Aid for UK taxpayers[/p][p]For UK taxpayers donating in £GBP via this page, please remember to elect to add Gift Aid. For every £1 you donate, Assist RR UK will receive £1.25 through the government’s Gift Aid scheme. Higher rate UK tax payers, can reclaim 20% of charitable donations through HMRC.[/p][p]100% of donations ring fenced and guaranteed[/p][p]Assist RR and IMHO USA are also happy to guarantee that 100% of what you donate will be used for cataract surgeries alone.[/p][p]Team Solihull to take on The Cotswold Way Ultra Challenge - 53 KM walk [/p][p]The community of Solihull School has been a long term supporter of Sri Lanka’s poorest people. People whose lives have been affected most deeply by the 2004 tsumani, the 26 year civil war ending in 2009, the 2019 Easter bombings and the current pandemic.[/p][p]Having previously raised funds for numerous education, health care and livelihood projects a team of staff, pupils and parents, past and present, would be hugely grateful for your kind sponsorship as they take on the 53 km Cotswold Way Challenge (https://ultrachallenge.com/cotswold-way-challenge/) on June 26 2021. [/p][p]Through the generosity of friends, family, our school community and Tamil diaspora across the UK, North America, Malaysia, Singapore and more, Team Solihull hope to raise funds for over 1000 cataract surgeries and would very much look forward to keeping donors up to date with developments. [/p][p]We would very much appreciate your support – please spread the word by forwarding this appeal to all those you feel would want to make a very big difference.[/p][p]Your sponsorship would be the light that keeps darkness from the lives of very poor people, who have already experienced far too much of it.[/p][p]Thank you,[/p][p]Team Solihull[/p][p]Mark, Donna, Max & Amelia Penney[/p][p]Matthew Smith[/p][p]Joe Bitter[/p][p]Kerry Featherstone[/p][p]Lucy Lunt[/p][p]Lucie Ray-Barrett[/p][p]Sean & Rachel Morgan[/p][p]Hayley & Al Middleton[/p][p]Hannah Hicks & Matt Grace[/p][p]Katie & Andrew Mansell[/p][p][br][/p][p] [/p][p](Below you'll find photographs of previous funded Cataract Camps in Sri Lanka: Mullaitivu, July 17th 2016 & Vavuniya, October 26th 2019) [/p]
