My story

[p]This April I will be taking on my biggest personal challenge to date: I will be running the London Marathon (my first marathon!). My aim is to raise awareness about mental health and more importantly much needed funds for Mind, an incredible mental health charity. [/p][p]Many of my friends will comment on how much I love running, and it’s true, but that definitely hasn’t always been the case. I spent PE classes lying about laps in cross-country and pretending to throw a javelin at my teacher behind her back (real mature) before being wiped off the school register and being labelled a school refuser. I have had depression and anxiety since a young age and was diagnosed with clinical depression when I was 13 after trying to take my own life. Living with a mental health problem has certainly had its ups and lots of downs, but I have been lucky to receive formal support over the years, and more recently discover running as a great way of managing my mental health day-to-day. [/p][p]So I love running, but I think anything more than 8-10 miles hurts and I find the prospect of dragging my limbs around 26.2 miles (plus all the training miles!) unnerving to say the least. One thing that will make this journey so worthwhile is raising some money for a great cause. [/p][p]So why Mind? Mind have helped me and they’ve also been there for my mum who believes, to this day, that they saved her life. Mind do fantastic work offering anyone with a mental health problem somewhere to turn for advice and support, plus they campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding around mental health. You can read more about them here. [/p][p]I would love to raise as much money as I can and I’d be so grateful for your support to help Mind keep doing the amazing work they do every day. Thank you, Soph x[/p]
