Team story

[p]In Dec 2014, a university friend of ours, Ali, was told the heart breaking news that Felix, his and Robyn's now six-year-old son, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, an incurable and fatal muscle wasting disease that kills more children than any other genetic condition. There is accelerating deterioration from birth, resulting in a very significant decrease in quality of life by age 7 to 8, wheelchair dependency by early teens, total dependency (breathing, feeding, any movement) by late teens and a lingering death in their mid-twenties.[/p][p]However, there is confidence that we can save this and future generations of Duchenne patients. In 2017 human trials started on several disease-modifying and potentially curative drugs that have been in development for years. Early anecdotal reports offer real hope. Notwithstanding the amazing progress, there’s a huge amount of work still to be done, for which we need money - which is why we’re embarking on an epic day's ride on 21 July from the top to the bottom of Wales (185 miles and climbing 4500m).[/p][p]All the money raised will go to Duchenne UK, with 100% of it being spent on drug development. The charity was founded by Emily Crossley and Alex Johnson, both mothers of Duchenne boys. Their passion and drive are inspirational and, as well as being at the forefront of drug development and central to the projects described above, as well as many more, the charity is instrumental in changing the approval and reimbursement processes. Duchenne UK really is transforming the outlook for all Duchenne patients.[/p][p]There really is no time to waste if we’re going to halt the progress of this hideous disease so please give as generously as you possibly can.[/p][p][br][/p]
