My story

[p]Thankyou for taking the time to visit my fundraising page! I am so excited to have the opportunity to run the London Marathon in 2019, something that as a runner I have always known I wanted to do. But jumping from a half marathon to a full marathon is a huge challengeā€¦so I have decided to raise money for Jesuit Missions in the process.[/p][p]Jesuit Missions has been supporting vulnerable communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America for over 50 years. [/p][p]I recently was lucky enough to visit Guyana in South America with Jesuit Missions, where I visited three schools involved in an Education Bilingual Programme. Although English is the national language in Guyana, many children from the Amerindian communities grow up speaking an indigenous language, such as Wapishiana. This means that when they go to school they have an immediate disadvantage nationally, as they struggle to take in and learn a completely new language. Very few of these children complete their secondary education as they fail to get through the end of year exams. This new bilingual programme encourages children to learn in Wapishiana simultaneously alongside English when they begin school. This is part of a campaign to preserve the local indigenous Amerindian culture which works closely with the protection of the Amazon basin which covers 90% of Guyana.[/p][p]Jesuit Missions also responds to emergency disasters such as the heavy floods which hit Kerala, South India earlier this year. Somewhere which, as most of you know, is very close to my heart.[/p]
