My story

[p]People with a learning disability face inequalities in every area of life -[/p][p][gt] in the workplace[/p][p][gt] accessing activities in their local community[/p][p][gt] receiving good quality healthcare[/p][p]MENCAP tackles these issues head-on. It provides support in a way that meets individual needs and encourages greater independence.[/p][p]They give expert advice and information that empowers people and their families.[/p][p]They campaign relentlessly for changes, bringing greater equality for people with a learning disability.[/p][p]So - here's the question -[/p][p]Will you support me in the 2020 London Marathon?[/p][p]By doing so, you'll be helping MENCAP to support people with a learning disability to live the life they choose and do the things they love.[/p][p]I do hope you can contribute. As you see above, I took part in the very first London Marathon in 1981. I didn't quite win - I came in at about half-way down the field of 7,500. I was 25 and weighed 10.5 stone. This time, I'm 64 and weigh a trifle more - so there's work to be done![/p][p]Next year, it's the 40th. This time around, the heart is just as willing. The legs less so. However, training is going really well. So, fingers crossed and let's crack on![/p][p]Please support MENCAP - It's a great charity. Every pound you give will make every step of those long, cold, winter slogs worthwhile.[/p][p]Thank you.[/p][p]Steve Church[/p]

A worthy cause. Good luck with training and with the race itself. I expect to see a silly hat at the very least but ideally a Rhino outfit, full suit of armour or similar.

I'll be running beside you - even beyond Blackfriars. Enjoy the day and aim for less than double Kipchoge's recent time.
