[p]Firstly, a massive thank you to all who helped me raise £9551.25K (Including Gift Aid) in sponsorship for 2019. In total sponsored volunteers raised 200K last year, little did we all know what was about to happen this year![/p][p]This is my 10th year for volunteering at Crisis At Christmas, but as I am sure you have seen for yourself, it is still a very sad situation with more people than ever being homeless in some way. I am sure you will agree, that it is still needed and now more than ever in 2020. I always wanted to volunteer for a homeless charity, as homelessness has always been something I felt strongly to try and help to do something and learn about- there for the grace and all that. After both my parents passed away, the time felt right to get involved. Ever since I started volunteering in 2011, I have found it really a rewarding and a positive thing to do at the festive time. [/p][p]Well it’s the start of December and can you believe another year has passed and what a Year it has been for us all! With that in mind, I know we all have had allot to deal with in 2020, so I fully understand if you are not able to support this Year. However, I hope you do not mind the Tandy Crisis annual email again![/p][p]If you would like to read more on how we are delivering Crisis this Year under Covid and how your generosity will help Crisis deliver this Christmas under the current Pandemic, (as well as all Year round), please take a moment to read below:[/p][p]As you can imagine, with the Covid situation we are having to offer Crisis @ Christmas 2020 in a different way this year, but Crisis and us volunteers are still going to be offering accommodation, food, companionship and services this Festive time. In fact instead of the usual week, we will be running this for 2 weeks from the Monday 21 December 2020 to Monday 04 January 2021. [/p][p]I will be doing 4 morning shifts (7.00 am- 4.00pm) this year, in the second week from 29th- 1st Jan. If they need me to do more I will of course, extra pair of hands and all that! I will be based at a Hotel in Croydon (see below how C@C is working in hotels this year, instead of our usual centres), due to the current pandemic.[/p][p]With health & safety of Guests and volunteers the most important consideration, we have been instructed to reduce the amount of shifts we do and not do more than one week in total and stay on one shift team, to reduce the risk of spreading infection, under Government guidelines.[/p][p]This year coronavirus has impacted all our lives and we are having to make significant changes to the Christmas project to ensure that we are responding responsibly to this risk. So we are not able to do the usual Day and accommodation centres in Schools as I normally do but instead, we are part of the ongoing rough sleeping Hotel initiative that was started back in March when Lockdown began for us all, and the rough sleepers’ night shelters had to close, because of the risk of the pandemic. As you can imagine, the homeless were then and are now, among the most vulnerable and the Virus has proven to have devastating results in infections rates (and deaths) in homeless shelters around the World. Hence the UK closed ours in the lockdown back in March and moved the guests to participating hotels, run my homeless charities like St Mungo’s and Crisis and many others across the UK. This initiative was due to stop in July (guests faced being turned out on the streets with no-where to go!) but with lobbying, has been extended to start of 2021, we will see what happens then!![/p][p]You can see how Crisis worked with the homeless this year during the current crisis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pij5QpXnKWM [/p][p]How does this year’s Crisis At Christmas work for our guests in Hotels?[/p][p]· As volunteers and our guests will not be able to mix in a communal space as they have done in previous years, we are opening a Call Centre, based in our Poplar Warehouse. Guests will be able to contact the Call Centre for advice on a range of issues as well as being able to chat to a team of Befrienders.[/p][p]· Many of our Health services will still be available to guests. This year the providers will visit each of the Centres at least twice.[/p][p]· Activities and Entertainment this year will be a digital offer. We will have volunteers at each of the Centres to help guests access these. Guests will be given access to devices to enable them to avail of the offer. They will also be provided with Activity packs to enable them to take part in the Arts and Crafts events which are always very popular with our guests.[/p][p]· Our Catering for this year will be provided by the hotels, or where this is not possible, we are using a catering firm.[/p][p]· Our popular Salon service will still be running and by appointment only.[/p][p]Useful links:[/p][p]· If you would prefer to donate direct to Crisis. For example for just £28.22 you would be reserving a place for one of our guests. You will not only be providing warmth, company and happiness for someone this Christmas, but also long-term support through our year round services to end their homelessness for good. If you would like more information on what I do at Crisis at Christmas and what Crisis does all year round and it’s aims and goals to help end homelessness, please read below:[/p][p]With this in mind please watch and share our film with your family, friends and colleagues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Xmi2Ry_BNk [/p][p]What guests say about Crisis At Christmas week from last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDa1COmRugM&feature=y[/p][p] Although all the people are like me and are Volunteers, it still all costs money, so your donation will make a real direct difference!!![/p][p]I have seen it for myself what your donations, Crisis and the volunteers achieve for all our guests, who really do appreciate and value everything we offer them. You can read / watch short videos of some of their and the volunteers stories (and the services and stats over the festive period) we offer, here on the Crisis website: [/p][p]https://www.crisis.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer/volunteer-for-crisis-at-christmas/[/p][p]You can read more on what Crisis does all year round here https://www.crisis.org.uk/ from its Skylight centres around the UK supporting and advising the homeless and enabling many to get out of homelessness for good; to political lobbying to influence changes in housing legislation in many areas:[/p][p]An example of all year round support and work that Crisis do at their Skylight centres across the UK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=53&v=LYdpAPdtPpA&feature=emb_logo[/p][p]So once again thanks for reading this and whatever you can spare this year, I, Crisis and (more importantly as always), the homeless people of London and across the UK will be enormously grateful.[/p][p]Please feel free to spread this link to others- as you know I am not on Face book / Twitter - yes I am still a dinosaur- sorry! [/p][p]Once again many thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you have a really wonderful festive time and let us all hope we find a way out of this Pandemic in 2021. I think it has all made us realise how lucky many of us are and take many things for granted.[/p][p]Take care and look after yourself and others.[/p][p]Steve [/p][p]Steve Tandy[/p][p][br][/p]
