My story

[p]Thank you taking the time to come to my Virgin Giving page. I have pledged to give up all alcohol for one year. Anyone who knows me will understand what a huge challenge this will be to me ๐Ÿ˜‚![/p][p]I will be doing this to aid the work of Metabolic Support UK a fantastic charity close to my heart. The charity helps people and their families with all inherited Metabolic Disorders, offering practical advice and emotional support. They also connect them with other patients to help with the often isolating feelings associated with being diagnosed with a rare disorder.[/p][p]My husband Carl, of nearly 25 years, has had Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKD) since he was born. This is a rare genetic condition that causes a haemolytic anaemia, in which a personโ€™s red blood cells are broken down prematurely. This results in constant tiredness, shortness of breath, muscle aches and a reduced ability to concentrate, and for Carl the need to have blood transfusions every two weeks. In spite of this, he has worked hard all his life and refuses to be defined by his condition. He, together with Metabolic Support UK, is passionate about ensuring that families with newly diagnosed children are properly supported in finding the best care quickly, giving them the best life chances as soon as possible.[/p][p]Metabolic Support UK are aiming to hold a patient workshop for those living with PKD at their annual conference. This will bring PKD patients and families together to better understand their needs and to put them in touch with each other for support. They will also improve resources and toolkits to assist with medical appointments and to increase awareness of the charity so new patients understand where to go for help. Any money raised through this challenge (no matter how small the amount you are able to spare, it all adds up) will help Metabolic Support Uk to provide these vital services. [/p][p]Wish me luck and please help towards the brilliant work that this charity continues to do each day![/p][p][br][/p]
