My story

[p]FURTHER UPDATE:[/p][p]I’m happy to report that I successfully completed the virtual London Marathon 2020 - it was a rainy day and got to admit was pretty tough, but managed it in 4 hours 53 mins [/p][p]i have been given a deferred place in the 2022 London Marathon, so I am continuing to use this page as my fundraising platform. I am really looking forward to completing a proper marathon with the buzz and support of the crowds which makes the atmosphere so special. And to top it all it will actually be my 60th birthday on the day. So a very special reason to celebrate. [/p][p]I am also running the 2021 London Landmarks half marathon in August for guide dogs, so I am hoping that with all your continued support I can raise even more money for this worthwhile cause. [/p][p]Please continue to read my story as it will explain why I am raising money for Guide Dogs. [/p][p]UPDATE: It certainly has been strange times - on hindsight if the marathon had taken place when it should have in April last year, it would have been doubtful I would have run it as just before lockdown I fell whilst training having 2 stitches in my head and a badly sprained ankle ....... so I was probably the only thankful one and was glad it was postponed !!! I was looking forward to the challenge in October, and I will certainly be running the virtual marathon on 4th October. As it stands I’m not sure which year I will be doing the real thing, but rest assured I WILL run it!!! [/p][p]I’m still fundraising as hard as I can, so please support me if you possibly can. You can read my story below: [/p][p]Ok guys, so I’m running the London Marathon. A sentence I thought I’d never say, but one I’m so looking forward to. I couldn’t run to catch a bus 3 years ago but within the last year I’ve completed 5 half marathons so I’m pretty confident with the right training I will be able to complete a marathon distance. [/p][p]My chosen charity is Guide Dogs. I have no direct family connection with the charity (although my aunt is heavily involved in the organisation) but it was a charity close to my dad’s heart (who sadly passed away this year) but I have, over the last few months, been a VI (visually impaired) guide at my local parkrun which has given me an overwhelming realisation just how important it is for VI people to participate in events (such as parkrun) as an equal. I have also volunteered as “dog sitter” when their owners have been participating. It’s such an amazing experience especially when the VI runner and their guide dog are reunited at the end. The bond they have is incredible and it’s just amazing to see just how the quality of lives can be improved with the aid of their “best friend”. [/p][p]Guide Dogs do an incredible job, and if I can urge you to donate to this fantastic cause, I would be so grateful. [/p][p]Thank you so much, your donation will help in making a VI person become more independent and will urge me through to the finish line. XX [/p][p]It is with great sadness that I have to report that Marissa, who was my first VI person I guided at Market Harborough parkrun, tragically passed away before Christmas. She was a special vibrant and beautiful young woman who will be so missed. I am dedicating my run at the marathon in her name. RIP Marissa[/p]
