Team story

[p]Cycling over 1,000 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End supporting Norwich Samaritans, Cancer Research, Epilepsy Research & The Alzheimer's Society.[/p][p]James, Martin & John are planning a big cycling challenge to raise funds for four charities that are close to each of our hearts. Most of us have never cycled much further than to the local shop, so this is going to be a real challenge![/p][p]The ride starts from John O'Groats on 16th June and ends 1,034 miles later on 2nd July at Land's End. The seventeen-day journey is divided into legs of between 40 and 85 miles, averaging 61 miles per day over the whole trip.[/p][p]On each leg, our colleagues and other supporters will join the ride for a few miles to spur us on. Other cyclists are welcome to join any of the ride’s legs or stages to help raise funds and our spirits. We'll be avoiding major roads / A-roads as much as possible along the way.[/p][p]We're very scared. We're in training already. We're gearing up. And we need your help and motivation.[/p][p]Thank you all for your support... We will update you as we go.[/p][p]A bit about the charities we are supporting:[/p][p]Norwich Samaritans[/p][p]A call to Samaritans can be the last hope for people who are suicidal, desperate, out of luck or lonely.[/p][p]With over 200 branches in the British Isles, Samaritans rely on public donations and on volunteers to listen to anyone who needs to talk.[/p][p]All Samaritans branches welcome new volunteers. James joined Norwich branch three years ago and it's a decision he's never regretted, even though the work can sometimes be challenging.[/p][p]Why not join the thousands of people based in over 200 branches across Britain who spend just 16 hours a month supporting those in need? You'll get extensive training and support as well as the opportunity to work with marvellous colleagues.[/p][p]Cancer Research UK[/p][p]Most of us have been affected by cancer in one way or another. One in two of us are going to get it and in the past year a number of our friends, family and colleagues have been diagnosed with this horrible disease. This charity is doing some amazing things to find ways to treat or even cure cancer. We hope that in some small way we can help help to raise awareness and be part of the cure.[/p][p]The Alzheimer's Society[/p][p]Another disease that affects so many of us... There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This will soar to 2 million by 2051. 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that's one every three minutes. There is no cure for dementia - yet - but again this charity is supporting people with dementia, raising awareness of the disease and working towards a cure.[/p][p]Epilepsy Research UK[/p][p]Sadly John's brother died last year having suffered with epilepsy all his life and after having had a particularly bad seizure. Epilepsy Research UK supports and promotes basic and clinical scientific research into the causes, treatments and prevention of epilepsy. They are the only national charity in the UK that is exclusively dedicated to funding independent research into this condition.[/p]
