My story

[p]After watching Marc run numerous marathons I said "I will never run a marathon".....never say never!![/p][p]This is a massive challenge for me, and one that I will not be doing again - and this time I mean it![/p][p]The thing that gets me through the training, and hopefully will get me round the marathon is thinking about my gorgeous sister, Alice, and thinking that no matter how much it hurts me it is nothing compared to what she went through - and she never complained at all.[/p][p]In January 2010, after a year of trips to the GP, Alice (age 35) was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer. She was told that with chemotherapy she could possibly live for 2 years. Unfortunately this was not the case and Alice died in the early hours of 12th July 2010, with me lying next to her holding her hand.[/p][p]Alice spent a few nights at the Rainbow Rooms at Newbury hospital, where I could stay with her overnight. These rooms are funded by Newbury & District Cancer Care Trust. What Alice really wanted to do was go home to my parents house - with equipment supplied by NDCCT and nurses from Marie Curie this was made possible and Alice spent her last few days surrounded by her family.[/p][p]We will be eternally grateful to NDCCT for the help and support that they gave our family during and after Alice's illness.[/p][p]They also supported us during my Dad's diagnosis and treatment for Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, which thankfully he is now in remission from.[/p][p]When Helen from NDCCT rang to say they had a place for the London marathon and would I like to run it for them I couldn't say no - even though I put the phone down and cried my eyes out!![/p][p]I am not under any pressure to raise a certain amount of money for them, but would like to raise as much as I possibly can to enable them to help other local families that are going through what we did.[/p][p]I am so grateful for all donations - large or small - every pound will help another patient and their family.[/p][p]NDCCT are a small and independent charity, founded in 1984 to help local people who have been diagnosed with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. They offer practical help and information to patients and their families living in West Berkshire, and are the parent charity for the Rainbow Rooms and the Charles Clore Day Hospice at the West Berkshire Community Hospital.[/p][p]They work closely with Clinical Nurse Specialists, medical professionals and the Day Hospice to help improve the support offered from the point of diagnosis, for as long as we are needed.[/p]
