I had challenged him to complete the 13.1 miles in under 2 hours. With another scorcher of a day, IT band injuries affecting training, and discovering that the course was actually quite hilly, John wasn't too confident that he would break the 2 hour challenge on the day. However, he is one determined man and he set off at a good pace with the intention of giving it his best shot. Some early hills slowed him down a bit in the first half and at 7 miles, was struggling with his injury, but a downhill stint around 8 miles saw his pace increase again and got him back on track. With this confidence boost and the realisation that the 2 hours seemed achievable again, John pushed hard for the last 5 miles keeping a fantastic pace. By the time Izzy, Bobbi and I saw him just round the corner from the finish line, he looked very hot and very tired, but was still running, and we knew that unless he had a terrible fall in the last few metres he was going to do it and we were cheering him on like crazy. John crossed the finish line, completing his half marathon challenge in 1 hour 59 minutes and 36 seconds and we could not have been more proud of him! A great day and a great run - well done John, you worked so hard out there![/p][p][br][/p][p]5k Pizza Run[/p][p]On Saturday 19th May, we recruited a couple more team members (our good friends Rachael and Chloe) and we all set off for 3 laps around Beeston park, with an incentive of pizza throughout the run to encourage the kids. It was another lovely sunny day, and the atmosphere was great. There were lots of people dressed in pizza themed costumes and they put on a fun warm up to get us all ready. We started off well, and made it round the first lap to enjoy our first slice of pizza. Bobbi's little legs were beginning to tire and so resulted in some run/walk intervals. Izzy and Chloe decided to add to the challenge of the run by trying out all the fitness equipment that was dotted round the park. The team got a bit spread out over the course of the run, with Bobbi and I bringing up the rear, and John doing lots of back and forth running to encourage the team. But towards the end we all came back together, with me pushing Izzy over the final section, and Bobbi racing John to line, where we were lucky enough to get an extra slice of pizza each and the best medals ever. It may have taken us a while to get round, but we had fun along the way and I am so proud of my girls for completing the run. They were so proud of their medals they both took them in to school for show and tell the next week![/p][p][br][/p][p]London Marathon [/p][p]This years London Marathon has been reported as the hottest on record with temperatures reaching 23.5 degrees. Completing 26.2 miles in that heat, especially following the coldest winter to train through, proved to be a really tough challenge. So, as a result of this our times may have been slower than we hoped for, but most importantly, Team Hercules members did not give up and all 3 runners (Katie, Hercules (Jane) and Dan) crossed the finishing line safe and well to pick up their beautiful bit of bling. Amazing efforts all round! Jane and Dan I am so so proud and grateful to you both for your support. It was fab starting with Jane, then seeing Dan at 19 miles gave me a big boost. Unbelievably Hercules remained in the horse outfit throughout, to the delight of other runners requesting selfies and the crowds cheering on the 'Donkey', and Dan - what a finish, check it out on catch up, he's flying down that final section. [/p][p]Reflecting on the day as a whole, it was an amazing experience to be part of. From early in the morning the privilege of being in the green start area amongst the fantastic set of people going for world record attempts in all kinds of weird and wonderful outfits, through the streets of London with unwavering (and loud) support from the crowds. Those amazing moments when you see your friend/husband/children, cheering till they are hoarse and giving the best smiles and biggest sweaty hugs, thank you team Hercules supporters, you created the best moments in the run for me! Then there's the sense of relief when you see the sign for 385 yards to go and you know you can do it, then finally crossing that finishing line, collecting your medal and knowing, anytime soon, that you can sit down. Thanks London - what an experience! [/p][p]Other April Events[/p][p]Kim's Head Shave: Amazing Auntie Kim completed her charity head shave - what a brave lady she is and thankfully looks absolutely gorgeous! We are so grateful to Kim for doing this for the team and for all the donations it generated - thank you![/p][p]Climb the Shard in 2 hours: A team of 9 took on the Climb the Shard Challenge last weekend. The ages ranged from 5 to 40, there was limited climbing experience and some fear of heights going into the challenge so we weren't sure if it could be done. But the team were determined and focused and smashed the height of the Shard twice over. It was hard work but also really good fun - well done John, Izzy, Bobbi, Amelie, Jake, Joe, Andy, Dan and Rob, and thank you Harrogate Climbing Centre for hosting and for the cheering squad who came along to support.[/p][p]FINAL EVENT[/p][p]Tough Mudder - Katie, John, Kim and Ben will be taking on the toughest of mud runs - will we all manage the monkey bars!?!?[/p][p]The Reason…[/p][p] [/p][p]5 years ago our little superstar Bobbi was born. Soon after her birth we were back in hospital with a very poorly little girl. Bobbi was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition which means she needs medication every day, has to carry an emergency kit for the rest of her life, and getting any illness could mean a trip to the hospital. We were determined not to let this condition define her, and not to wrap her in cotton wool. 5 years on she is a crazy kamikaze little lady, just like her mummy![/p][p] [/p][p]The Challenges..[/p][p] Last year I (Katie) decided to do a ‘4 before 40’ challenge - 4 sponsored running events before I hit the big 4-0. A fun 5k, a muddy obstacle run, a hard half marathon and the London Marathon. Along the way family have friends have decided to get involved for which I am so grateful.[/p][p]All money raised will go to Climb, a charity who support children and families affected by metabolic conditions.[/p][p] [/p][p]The Team…[/p][p] [/p][p]The Husband: I’ve roped John in to do 3 of the 4 events (No London Marathon, his poor old legs wouldn’t take it, and he’s not happy about the half marathon anyway!). John will be running Leeds Half Marathon on Sunday 13th May - if your local come and cheer him on! [/p][p]The Sister: My Fab sister Jane, the real runner in the family, is running London with me, and also a half marathon locally – another husband roped in, her hubbie Chris! [/p][p]The Crazy Gang: For our mud run we have drafted in more family members to join the team; Kim and Ben, so Team Hercules is shaping up pretty nicely, thank you so much everybody![/p][p]The Mates: Dan Carter has joined Team Hercules Marathon crew, cousins and friends came along to help 'climb the shard' (Amelie, Jake, Joe, Dan, Rob and Andy), and Rachael and Chloe came and ran for pizza with us.[/p][p] [/p][p]The Name…[/p][p] [/p][p]Why “Team Hercules”? Well, the main reason is due to Bobbi’s (sometimes unhealthy) obsession with horses. She has hundreds of toy horses…plastic horses, stuffed horses, horse t-shirts, horse leggings…to be honest she thinks she is a horse half the time, she whinnies, she neighs, she trots and she gallops. Last year we took her horse riding for the first time. She fell in love with her horse, a small brown and white pony called Hercules.[/p][p] [/p][p]My sister Jane, I may have failed to mention so far, is running the London Marathon dressed as a horse (IN A WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT NO LESS!). We asked Bobbi to name the horse, so of course there was only one real option for her…[/p][p] [/p][p]AND SO TEAM HERCULES WAS BORN![/p][p] [/p][p]The Events…[/p][p]London Marathon April 2018. Bolton Abbey Festival Half Marathon Feb 2018. Four Villages Half Marathon Jan 2018. Leeds Half Marathon May 2018. Tough Mudder Half July 2018. 5k Pizza run 19th May 2018.[/p][p]Completed Challenges:[/p][p]May 2018: The Gordon family plus Rachael and Chloe ran the pizza run[/p][p]May 2018: John ran the Leeds Half Marathon[/p][p]April 2018: Katie, Hercules and Dan ran the London Marathon[/p][p]April 2018: Kim's head shave, Climb the Shard [/p][p]March 2018: Lots and lots of running including 20 miles (Kirkstall to Saltaire and back) for Katie and Hercules[/p][p]Feb 2018: Beautiful Bolton Abbey Festival Half Marathon - Katie's first official challenge[/p][p]Jan 2018 Katie, Hercules and Chris A completed 4 villages half marathon[/p][p]Thank you for visiting our page, we really appreciate any donations, helping Climb to support children and families and helping to fund important research looking to improve the quality of life of children suffering from metabolic conditions, and maybe even finding cures.[/p]
