My story

[p]In 2015 I had a ride on the back of a tandem with Oxted Cycling Club and a part of my life changed for ever; I could feel the wind and sun on my face and the thrill of not needing to see, the feeling of freedom was overwhelming.[/p][p]I have two eye conditions one called Macular dystrophy, which I got when I was seven, it is a very slow degenerative condition and I have 1% sight. In 2009 I then got Nystagmus, this makes my eyes move and I have a constant jumpy image. I have learnt to live with sight loss and do everything I can to enjoy life and cycling is fantastic, I just love it!![/p][p]Five Oxted club members have been incredibly kind, taking me for tandem rides. The rider at the front is called the ‘pilot’ and I am known as the ‘stoker’ on the back. Oxted cycling club did a most generous thing and gave me money towards buying my own tandem which I did in January 2018.I named my tandem “Jamie” after the lovely chap that sold me it from J D Tandems.[/p][p]Now I am going for the big one “the prudential Ride London 100 miles” on my trusted tandem with Duncan as my pilot. I have a team of seven, Alan, Jolyon, Patrick, Duncan, Andrew, Brian and I, and we are all taking part to raise funds for Sparks where I volunteer once a week in London. Sparks is a pioneering medical research charity for children and babies. Every day five children will die due to rare diseases and only 5% of funding is spent on paediatric research so that is why we want to help and raise money for Sparks.[/p][p]We are all tasked to raise £400 each, any donation will be truly wonderful, I know with your help we can achieve our team target.[/p][p]Thank you.[/p][p]Aileen, Alan, Jolyon, Patrick Duncan and I.[/p]
