Team story

[p]Many of you will know we were planning to run the London Marathon this year for Autistica, the UK’s autism research charity. [/p][p]Our plans may have changed due to postponement of the race but the imperative to raise funds for charities such as this important one remains vital in these globally difficult times.[/p][p]The A-Team - Alex, Gareth, Gemma, Jack, James and Tom - hope to run a marathon of our own all together when it is safe and suitable to do so, and raise lots of money for this wonderful organisation.[/p][p]Please give generously as we try to ensure the hard work doesn't go to waste and (for some of us) the middle-aged spread doesn't creep back.[/p][p]Thank you[/p][p]The A-Team[/p][p]A little info on Autistica...[/p][p]Austistica's priorities are led by the autism community: they only fund research with the biggest impact on autistic people’s lives. They partner with universities UK-wide, funding research in 11 cities.[/p][p]Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition which changes how people communicate and experience the world around them. The UK’s 700,000 autistic people, including 200,000 children, face a lifetime of little to no effective support and appalling prospects: [/p][p]Die 16 years younger than the norm[/p][p]25% speak few or no words [/p][p]84% cannot find full-time work[/p][p]79% have a mental health condition[/p][p]1 in 3 have a learning disability[/p][p]1 in 4 autistic people with a learning disability will not reach their 40th birthday[/p][p]Autistic people are more likely to die from epilepsy[/p][p]In five years, Autistica has recruited 16,000 members to their research network and funded 39 research projects. They believe to create true change, we need to understand, empower and unite the autistic community. Autistica harness the power of cutting-edge research to make this change. They also offer practical solutions including anxiety toolkits for families and an anxiety support app. [/p][p]How your support helps:[/p][p]£20 funds an hour of research[/p][p]£500 funds a brain scan[/p][p]£5,000 funds the start up of a new lab[/p][p]£15,000 funds a PhD student for a whole year[/p][p]Please support our team to help fund this life-changing research. Your support is greatly appreciated - thank you![/p]
