My story

[p]The Big Night Out in aid of SARA Tewkesbury[/p][p]On 29th December after the sun sets, Tewkesbury Paralympian Mel Nicholls and filmmaker and photographer David Grange, both volunteer crew of Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) Tewkesbury, will begin The Big Night Out. Heading out on foot into freezing temperatures and over 12 hours of darkness through rural terrain leaving Tewkesbury and beyond.[/p][p]Tested by their environment, unsupported and without sleep, they will need to withstand the elements of winter, keep moving and covering ground, and where necessary find natural shelter, while at all times staying away from any security of urban surroundings and outside assistance as they see out their challenge through to sunrise the next morning.[/p][p]Mel and David are taking on this winter’s night challenge in aid of SARA Tewkesbury. Alongside much needed fundraising, they aim to raise greater understanding of SARA’s life-saving volunteer work supporting our more vulnerable communities.[/p][p]Along with operations such as as flood rescue, SARA support the police in missing person searches through rural land and water searches. Searches can range from hours to days, alerts raised all weathers, 365 days of the year.[/p][p]SARA’s involvement focusses on vulnerable members of communities and include elderly and those suffering dementia, as well as individuals at risk through mental health illness.[/p][p]Christmas can be a time of amplified loneliness and may highlight difficult aspects of peoples lives. With this year being made particularly challenging, and for many frightening, with lockdowns and social distancing causing increased isolation and segregation through the Covid-19 pandemic, this winter more than ever our vulnerable communities need support and help from emergency services such as SARA to help keep them safe.[/p][p]While this will be a tough challenge for Mel and David to endure a winter’s night outside, it is a fraction of what many missing persons go through; lost, scared, confused, cold and alone, possibly ill or injured, and with no sunrise safety in sight. Someone suffering from dementia may not know they are in danger and lost, they may have gone missing in little more than a nightdress and covered substantial distance, unaware of the dangers of being out in the cold dark night, unable to summon help, and with time vs the elements being critical to their survival.[/p][p]'A physical and mental battle through the winter night in cold, damp December weather.' By putting themselves through a small part of what those who go missing may go through, Mel and David aim to share an insight into this volunteer emergency service and to those who Severn Area Rescue continue to search for to keep safe.[/p][p]Follow The Big Night Out updates on Facebook @ Severn Area Rescue Association - Tewkesbury[/p][p]The vital work of the station and crews at Tewkesbury and SARA as a whole is only possible thanks to kind donations and charity fundraising. With the effects of 2020 being felt through the charity sector, SARA very much included, as well as increased costs due to critical PPE needs. All planned fundraising, support events and bucket collections have had to be cancelled for the year, and this has had a significant effect on Tewkesbury station and SARA.[/p][p]Your support and donations will help keep Mel and David pushing on through the long winter night and most importantly help keep SARA operating to keep those that need it, safe.[/p][p]UPDATE 19th December[/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lIkC-7oGAvE?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p]
