Team story

[p]WE DID IT!!!![/p][p] On Tuesday 22nd May 2018 a team of runners calling themselves the Budding Hadrians Wall Runners, ran the length of Hadrian’s Wall between Wallsend and Carlisle Castle. [/p][p]This is a distance of 71 miles following the National Trail Path. The team was made up of doctors, nurses and other NHS employees and family members from Penrith Hospital Minor Injuries Unit and Cumbria Health on Call.[/p][p]The 71 miles represents the 70 years since the start of the National Health Service plus one for luck.[/p][p]These organizations care for out of hours patients across Cumbria. The caring profession understands that many patients and their families require ongoing support beyond their initial treatment and that this is often given by charitable organizations. For this reason our chosen charities will be Eden Valley Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Care.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The idea for this challenge came about as a result of the sad death of Bill the husband of Sam Budd, a Penrith MIU nurse. Sam from being a non-runner has set her sights on completing 2 half marathons in the next year to raise funds for the charities that offered most support during an awful time.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The route was divided into 7 ten mile approximate sections. Dan Jones ,a Cumbria Health on Call Doctor based in Penrith was at the start at 5 am. He was joined by Sam and two of her family members. The set off from Segedunam in Wallsend and ran the first 12 miles in the famous fog on the Tyne. The baton was then passed to the next two runners.[/p][p]Dan Jones continued to run until he reached 52 miles. Two off road hilly marathons in 10 hours![/p][p]As different teams of two or three took over the weather picked up and the scenery became magnificent. A group of 8 runners including Sam Budd ran the last 10 miles with a similar sized group walking in.[/p][p]Sarah Buckle a receptionist at Penrith hospital walked the entire route over 4 days and had the blisters to prove it.[/p][p]Sam ran in total 22 miles on the day which was a tremendous feat for someone who was a non runner a few short months ago.[/p][p]Other Choc employees to run were Dr Patrick Gray, Richie Macgregor, Nicola Phillips and Pharmacist Ruth Oneil with her son.[/p][p]Jackie Woodrow, wife of the organiser Simon, and a Community First Responder ran 15 miles of Wall in total.[/p][p]The finish was at the front of Carlisle Castle where the newly installed weeping Poppy display was on show.[/p][p]Nigel Winter, Steve Carruthers ,Chris Goodier and Simon Woodrow from the Penrith CHOC Driver team all completed sections of the run.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Simon Woodrow says that the whole day was a brilliant team effort. All of the runners and walkers did as much as they possibly could and demonstrated that their caring goes beyond their day to day work. [/p][p]We have raised more than £3000 so far and will leave the Virgin Giving site open for another few weeks. [/p][p][br][/p][p]A big thank you to all who took part or donated money[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p] Every day’s a good day[/p]
