Within two years, the illness forced Sarah, who is now 50, to give up the job she’d adored for 23 years, as Marketing Manager at the Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre.[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]She now does part-time voluntary work which manages to maintain a theatrical connection – as the Business Development Manager for the MGA Academy of Performing Arts. So her skills now benefit hundreds of young performers just starting out on their careers.[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]Witnessing the devastating impact this painfully debilitating illness has on Sarah’s life moved Simon Hanson, who is Head of Music at MGA, together with several students and others who know Sarah, to do something to help. This resulted in the first Butterfly and the Wolf concert in 2013.[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]WHY LUPUS UK?[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]Despite affecting 50,000 people in the UK, research into treatments for lupus is grossly underfunded. No medication specifically developed to treat the disease has been licensed for use in the UK in over 50 years.[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]So lupus patients are treated with, among other things, medication for malaria and cancer. And every Tuesday night, Sarah injects a chemotherapy drug directly into her stomach.[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]She will do this for the rest of her life. Or until better medication — or perhaps even one day, a cure — is found.[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]To find out more, please visit the website of LUPUS UK.[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]HOW DONATIONS HELP[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]LUPUS UK is a small charity, so efforts such as The Butterfly and the Wolf make a vital difference — the £5200 raised in 2013 was the second highest fundraised donation the charity received all year.[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]Yet it still manages to make a difference to the lives of people with lupus and in Scotland it funds a specialist nurse for lupus patients. It is also paying for a £24,000 research project at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, where lupus patients are undergoing MRI brain scans in a bid to better understand lupus.[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;] [/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]GIFT AID[/span][lt]br style="color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;" /[gt][span=color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small;]UK taxpayers are encouraged to tick the Gift Aid box when donating. It doesn’t cost the donor a penny more, yet it enables LUPUS UK to reclaim from the government, 25p for every £1 given. And it really makes a big difference — an additional £3.75 for every £15 donated. From last year’s concert, almost £1000 was raised through Gift Aid alone for LUPUS UK.[/span][/p]
