Team story

[p]Keswick Rotary joins forces with Calvert Bear in the 5 Peak Challenge to help save much loved charity[/p][p]The Lake District Calvert Trust (Calvert Lakes), with its ethos of challenging disability through outdoor adventure, welcomes people of all ages with disabilities from across the UK. Established over 40 years ago, the future of Calvert Lakes is now threatened as a direct consequence of the coronavirus pandemic. They urgently need funds to secure their long term future. [/p][p]Keswick Rotary Club teamed up with Calvert Bear (the centre’s mascot) to launch “Calvert Bear’s 5 Peak Challenge”. This physical challenge, on 26 May 2021, saw Calvert Bear and his human companions climb, cycle and paddle to complete a circuit of the 5 peaks after which the Calvert Trust activity teams are named. (Dodd, Skiddaw, Latrigg, Grisedale Pike and Barf ). [/p][p]With a total ascent of over 7,500 feet and distance of almost 23 miles this was a test of endurance for the members of Calvert Bear's team who completed the full circuit. We are enthusiastic but not definitely not performance athletes![/p][p]The Calvert Lakes Experience[/p][p]With their inspirational staff and superb range of adaptive equipment, Calvert Lakes opens up a vast range of outdoor experiences to those with disabilities. It’s an opportunity for participants to challenge themselves and overcome perceived limitations; developing a newfound confidence which they can take back to their everyday lives. With its emphasis on: “It’s What You CAN DO That Counts” the experience can be profoundly life changing.[/p][p]Unable to operate for much of last year, the trust suffered a £1m shortfall in income in 2020. This charitable trust, run on a not-for-profit basis, depends on groups for much of its income. With no financial support from UK government, in December 2020, the trust launched their emergency Bounce Back Appeal. The charity has now raised over £730,000 towards its £1m target, enabling a planned re-opening of the Calvert Lakes Activity Centre in late June. With further losses of £500,000 anticipated this year due to the impact of the pandemic, more funds are urgently needed to safeguard the long term future of Calvert Lakes. [/p][p]Rotary and Calvert Lakes[/p][p]Keswick Rotary have supported Calvert Lakes since its foundation. Each year, Rotary clubs across Cumbria and Lancashire join together to collectively sponsor 50 people with wide-ranging disabilities, to take part in our annual district Rotary Adventure week at Calvert Lakes. [/p][p]“It was so amazing to see how great the facilities and activities actually are. Nobody is excluded, in fact, quite the opposite, everyone is encouraged to take part.”[/p][p]“Every time we come to Calvert, we leave with friends for life.”[/p][p]We want to play our part in ensuring this amazing charity can continue to provide life changing experiences for people with disabilities, not just those in our communities, but to all those who need it from across the UK and beyond. Please help us to achieve our goal and donate what you can.[/p][p]Thank you from Calvert Bear and his team (Catrina, Helen, Rosie, Brian, Graham, Jon, Paul and Tony)[/p]
