Team story

[p]Our awesome team, The Evelina Elephants, completed the RideLondon 100 Miles on 29th July in memory of William Alec Ferguson and to raise money for the Evelina London Children's Hospital who looked after him during his 19 day life.[/p][p]Steve, Kath, Bret, Doug, Adam, Emma, Ross, K, Sarah, Jack and Josh took to the roads of Surrey and London to do a gruelling 100 miles of cycling in the pouring rain and high winds. It was a bit of a shock after the weather we have had recently and made it even more challenging![/p][p]Here is a training link to a video of our training and our team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmqmE1c2iik&feature=youtu.be[/p][p]Read on for why we did this. This has been written by Adam and Emma (William's parents).[/p][p]William was born a few weeks early on 22nd December 2017 with an incredibly rare heart tumour.[/p][p]When just a few hours old he went to theatre at the Evelina London Children's Hospital and had his first heart drain operation and was then looked after in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) whilst he recovered. We got to spend a wonderful Christmas there and the staff were all incredible with helping us enjoy the day as fully as we could.[/p][p]William was doing so well and had gained enough weight that within a few days he got transferred to the Savannah Ward. Here we got to enjoy a few more relaxed days with William where he got to meet many more family and friends and we enjoyed our time working out how to look after a newborn with the support of all the nurses and doctors.[/p][p]Following the new year, things took a turn for the worse and William started to struggle more and more to breathe on his own as the tumour was impacting on his tiny lungs. [/p][p]Unfortunately we were told there was nothing that could be done for the tumour given its size, nature and position. William was transferred back to PICU where we were once again given amazing support by the staff there for the remaining days of William's life.[/p][p]On 10th January William was taken off ventilation and passed away in his mother’s arms. Although not the outcome we had hoped for, the care we received was incredible and we met lots of families and children during our time at the Evelina who also benefitted from the care and support offered which is largely down to donations from the public. We ride to remember William and help other families and children with the money we raise.[/p][p]Thank you for your donation.[/p]
