Team story

[p]Ever heard of Extreme Ironing? Introducing THE INGLEBOROUGH IRON CHALLENGE![/p][p]On the 30th August, we will run a half-marathon (13.1 miles) route up Ingleborough, a 2000ft mountain, with ironing boards, camping stoves, and flat irons strapped to our backs. Upon reaching the summit we will then iron several shirts, regardless of weather. [/p][p]Crazy? Probably. Which is why we need your support! [/p][p]Our purpose is to raise money and awareness for Samaritans, specifically the Bradford branch, where my Mum was a listening volunteer for over a decade. [/p][p]Samaritans is a charity dedicated to reducing feelings of isolation and disconnection that can lead to suicide. They do this by being available 24/7 for anyone who needs someone to simply listen to them, without judgement.[/p][p]In 2017 there were 6,213 reported suicides in the UK and Republic of Ireland - a conservative figure, due to difficulties in collecting suicide statistics. However, if say, only ten people are adversely affected by each suicide, that's over 60,000 people. Samaritans are there for them all, and anyone suffering in silence. [/p][p]For our part, the challenge embodies two things anyone can do to improve their mental health - in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner![/p][p]Exercise - you don't need to run up mountains, but the link between exercise and positive mental health is undeniably powerful. Humans evolved to move![/p][p]Mindfulness - more and more research is emerging demonstrating the countless benefits of mindfulness in an increasingly frantic world, and for many, ironing is a particularly mindful activity. When you're focused on that stubborn crease on a shirt collar, totally absorbed in the soft release of steam, you're in the bloody zone! Do it on a mountain, and who knows what might happen…[/p][p]At the end of the day, your mind is all you have. Let's take care of ours, and those of others.[/p][p]Stay tuned, and thank you for your support![/p]

On the summit of Everest, I had a feeling of great satisfaction to be first there... but ironing on Ingleborough is a much greater achievement.
