Team story

[p]This is arguably the biggest most testing challenge physically and mentally we will probably ever endure. We have put a team of 8 of us together in the hope of completing the world renowned Channel Swim from Dover to Cap Gris Nez, France. In doing this we hope to raise as much money as possible for two charities very close to the organisers hearts, Birmingham Children’s Hospital (Charity No. 1074850) and the armed forces charity Care For Casualties (Charity No. 1119071). [/p][p] [/p][p]Jennifer Berry, the teams captain, suffered a major brain hemorrhage at the age of 15, causing a stroke which was followed by two further mini strokes when she was 16. She was wheelchair bound for years afterwards and had to learn to speak, walk and complete basic daily tasks such as dressing and feeding herself all over again. Despite some experts predicting she would not walk again let alone recover fully, the exceptional work at Birmingham Children’s Hospital ensured Jennifer made a full recovery and has thrived ever since, completing marathons, parachute jumps, achieving her black belt in kickboxing and winning a world silver medal in 2012, not to mention becoming a wife, mother of three sons, and a charity trustee. Jennifer also had Rheumatology problems as a child and was a very frequent visitor to the Children’s Hospital whose work truly is exceptional and cares for thousands of children and their families each year and is supported heavily by fundraising.[/p][p] [/p][p]Her husband, Dan Berry, a former reconnaissance soldier with The Royal Green Jackets, was just 17 when he first experienced military operations, being deployed to Kosovo after the air strikes in 1999. He then completed another operational tour in Bosnia in 2001 as part of the enhanced divisional reconnaissance capability platoon (EDRC) for Operation Palatine, before leaving the military in 2003. In the past 16 years Dan has attended numerous funerals of friends who either lost their lives in combat or simply could not cope with the emotional scars from overseas operations and have tragically taken their own lives as a result. Care For Casualties actively supports Riflemen and their families who are suffering from the emotional and physical trauma of front line duties. This could be anything from counselling, to home adaptions for those may have lost limbs and struggle with everyday tasks, to the ongoing care of fallen Riflemen’s families and children.[/p][p] [/p][p]The team are under no illusion regarding the magnitude of the task ahead. Only 3 of the team members are active ‘swimmers’ but never faced waters like the English Channel therefore a vast amount of training and conditioning is required and has already begun. [/p][p]The cold alone is going to be a one of the biggest challenges we are going to have to face as we will be swimming the channel without wetsuits. Were trying not to think about the water conditions or sea life we may come face to face with!!!![/p][p]We will keep you updated with our swim practice (believe me we need it!!)[/p][p]Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any donations :)[/p][p] [/p][p] [/p][p][br][/p]
