Team story

[p]In 2021, the Putney Gumps are taking on another daunting and reckless mission in a bid to part our friends and families with a little cash, and to raise funds for our regular wonderful charities, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Downs Syndrome Association. We have battled through some daft ultras and other assorted challenges over the years, but never taken on a task that requires us to get up and go every day over a longer period. So, this time we have the historic Thames Path in our sights, a route that stretches 186 miles from the source of the river at Kemble in the Cotswolds to the sea, traditionally marked by the Thames Barrier. That conveniently equates to 7 stages, each of almost exactly marathon distance - we will be aiming to run 26.2 miles each day for a week starting on 10th September, lodging in various inns along the way, and completing the challenge on the 16th with the final leg taking us from Putney to the Barrier.[/p][p]We and our chosen charities will be more grateful than ever for any donations you feel able to make, especially in light of the immense difficulties and fundraising shortfalls these and many other charitable organisations have faced over the past 18 months. Their dedication and the support they offer are more challenging and more vital than ever. Thank you so much for any help you are able to provide.[/p][p]We will send regular updates to our donors, and post blogs and photos on our Putney Gumps website (LINK), as we nervously approach our mission, and as it unfolds in the first half of September. Please do make your own friends, families and colleagues aware of our challenge if you think they may be interested and would like to support us – we will certainly need all the help we can get![/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]?Background...[/p][p] [/p][p]As many of you know, we have set ourselves a few targets over the past fifteen years, and thanks entirely to your generosity have managed to raise lots of money.... In 2018, our 12 Marathons in 12 Months raised over £76,000, while two years earlier we ran 126 miles over two races within a week - the 2016 London Marathon and the Thames Path 100m ultra from Richmond to Oxford. We ran the inaugural 65km Great Strides Ultra Marathon, and have run it twice since in 2018 and 2019. The 100km 'Race to the Stones' in 2014 was the Putney Gumps' first Ultra. Johnnie organised a challenge that involved a team of heroic runners and cyclists covering360 miles in 36 hours in a relay from Portland Bill to Teddington, the home of the DSA, and before that a 50 mile Dragon Boat marathon down the Thames (as you may have gathered, our favourite river!). Last year, we set ourselves the target of breaking the 4 hour marathon mark, and completed the Virtual London Marathon in a time of 3 hours 43 minutes... through your kind donations we raised a further £10,805 for our good causes.[/p][p] [/p][p] [/p]
