My story

[p]So…fundraising in times of Coronavirus is a pretty impossible task. We know that there are so, so many people right now living in precarious circumstances and in need of financial support. BUT - did you know that those who have a physical disability are extremely vulnerable to suffering huge impacts on their emotional and physical wellbeing during lockdown - feeling lonely, isolated, and not being able to access the usual support and practical care needed? [/p][p]People with multiple sclerosis are classed as at ‘moderate risk’ (clinically vulnerable) to COVID - and ‘extremely clinically vulnerable’ if taking certain disease-modifying drugs or older in age. If they do catch coronavirus, they are more likely to suffer complications. So lots of people with MS have spent months self-isolating at home, with little direct contact with people outside their household. Even now - when people are enjoying a sneaky drink in the pub, a long-overdue haircut or a trip to Primark - those with MS are still advised to stay at home ‘where possible’ and strictly socially-distance when they go out. The MS Trust does amazing work to support people with multiple sclerosis - particularly during lockdown* - SO WE WANT TO GIVE THEM SOME MONEY!![/p][p]Our Mum Anne had MS, but - as we all like to say - ‘MS didn’t have Mum’. She was dealing spectacularly with it - managing to stay mobile, stay positive (and swim way more lengths than any of us ever could!). But, just over a year and a half ago she died from a cancer that we didn’t know she had until 3 weeks before. She’d spent 6 months in hospital before that fighting and fighting and fighting to get back on her feet and deal with the extra challenges that various operations and setbacks had put in her way. She kept her silliness and determination right up until near the end. [/p][p]Last year we (Jess and Bry) completed the London-Brighton bike ride in Mum’s memory and - thanks to lots of support from lovely people who knew how special Mum was and what a gaping hole her loss has left in the world - we raised over £3300 for the MS Trust. This year we’re doing it again WITH AN EXTRA SPECIAL ADDITION! Our Dad - John - is 72 years old (sorry Dad…outing you there) and he’s doing it with us this year! 55 miles over hilly terrain. He only started training properly at the beginning of this year….and already he’s absolutely killing it - he’s got some funky lycra, some strong legs and a squishy seat (bike seat…again, sorry Dad). [/p][p]This is a HUGE. BIG. DEAL. If Mum only knew that Dad was doing this for her she would be so proud. So give us money! For the MS Trust - so that they can continue supporting people with MS (including right now in times of COVID). For Dad - who’s probably (and quite embarrassingly) going to beat us up Ditchling Beacon. And for Mum - whose earth-shattering death has to serve for something positive.
