My story

[p]Dear Friends,[/p][p]We (Kaushik, Rohini, Pankaj, Vandana & Mayank) have been training hard for the last six months to undertake the challenge of a 9-day trek to the Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal. We are raising money for Sense International, a global charity that supports children who suffer the dual disability of being both deaf and blind in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Peru and Romania. [/p][p]The cost of this trek is entirely covered by us so anything you donate will go direct to the charity.[/p][p]Sense International is one of the world’s leading international organisations working for children with deafblindness and their families. Children with such severe disabilities in these countries desperately need education and healthcare. Without this, many will lead short, lonely lives.[/p][p]Although Sense International is fairly small, it has a big impact because of the way it works. It does not provide direct services, but instead provides expertise and training to local organisations, and persuades governments to take responsibility and incorporate support for people with deafblindness into public services and mainstream systems. Through Sense International's work, children with deafblindness receive the medical and educational support they need to communicate, to care for themselves and learn skills for independent living. Rather than being excluded they can thrive and live as valued human beings.[/p][p]We believe that education and training is key for children with deafblindness. Like many countries in the developing world, children with deafblindness face huge challenges. Most are excluded from school, often because teaching staff do not have the skills to support them and families are overwhelmed by the emotional and practical challenges. Without access to education, the children remain at home, and will not develop the vital communication and life skills they require to achieve basic independence.[/p][p]The funds raised on this trek will be used by Sense International to further the work it does for children with deafblindness and their families, for example to:[/p][p]Ø Train teachers to include children with deafblindness in mainstream school classes[/p][p]Ø Recruit and train Special Educators who work with families, so their child can attend mainstream school or learn at home[/p][p]Ø Create new regional resource centres providing hubs of expertise for schools and support to parents and parent's groups to facilitate the best possible learning[/p][p]Ø Provide targeted meals for malnourished children so that they are well enough to learn[/p][p]Ø Enable young people to learn vocational skills so they can earn a living[/p][p][br][/p][p]This is typically what Sense International could deliver with the funds we raise:[/p][p]· £10 - can pay for clinical assessment for one child to identify the best possible tailored support[/p][p]· £15 - can provide targeted meals to a malnourished child for three months[/p][p]· £80 - can buy glasses and hearing aids to help a child with low level sight or hearing[/p][p]· £100 - can train one young adult in a trade, providing independence and reducing poverty[/p][p]· £200 - can convert one classroom to make it accessible for children with disabilities[/p][p]· £500 - can train a Special Educator to provide the best education possible for children with deafblindness[/p][p]· £5,000 - can establish a ‘model school’ which is accessible to children with deafblindness for other schools to emulate[/p][p]· £15,000 - can pay for Sense International to deliver a national countrywide skills-sharing programme to help schools and governments deliver inclusive education[/p][p][br][/p]
