This run is being done in Julia Thomson’s honour and is dedicated to everyone that has supported The Julia Centre through sponsorship, fundraising and volunteer work over the past 10 years. THANK YOU![/p][p]THE JULIA CENTRE, BRAZIL[/p][p]The Julia Centre which is located in Canavieiras, Bahia in the northeast of Brazil was set up in 2009 as an addition to an existing project, The Garden of Angels by Cecilia and Bill Thomson in memory of their daughter, Julia Thomson who was tragically killed while crossing the road in New York. [/p][p]Choosing to instead light a candle than curse the darkness, The Julia Centre gives 125 disadvantaged children a different vision of life from the one that confronts them daily due to serious poverty and unfortunate family circumstances, often associated with drugs, crime and prostitution. It is here that the brightest and most vulnerable children are given a voice. [/p][p]These incredible children are taught that they are not their circumstances. They are their possibilities. [/p][p]The centre is run by a team of volunteers including the headmistress Regina and is coordinated by Ranataa. This team provide day care for children from the ages of 2 to 10 years old. The children are not only looked after and fed daily but also given any learning support they need to help them with their daily school work. The centre provides health care and inoculation. The children are also given invaluable learning experiences outside the classroom which provides an opportunity and vision for many young people to choose a better path in life. In the words of Maya Angelou, ‘when you know better, you do better’.[/p][p]In 2013, UNESCO recognised the work being done by The Julia Thomson Memorial Trust and called The Julia Centre a ‘project of opportunities’. UNESCO said in respect to the work being carried out that ‘the continuing involvement of your project is very important to the “Child of Hope” so that ordinary Brazilians can participate in what is being done to better the situation of the poor in Brazil’. [/p][p][br][/p][p]SPONSORSHIP - DONATE & MAKE A DIFFERENCE [/p][p]To mark the 10 year anniversary and to help continue the impactful work at The Julia Centre we ask that you pledge your support through sponsorship. Any donations large or small would be appreciated. 100% of the sponsorship money goes towards the running costs of the centre and directly to helping the people for whom it is intended. [/p][p]THANK YOU[/p][p]Donations will receive a personal note of thanks and a Bahia Band - a Brazilian wish bracelet from Bahia, Brazil. To request a wish bracelet, please email India Staunton & Rory-Dean Morgan with your name and postal address indiastaunton@yahoo.com [/p][p]A message from Julia Thomson’s parents, Bill and Cecilia Thomson, 2019[/p][p]The Julia Centre has become, in the last 10 years, a focal point for many community projects, from cultural performances of Brazilian music, sports for the locals, and a haven for small children whose parents can leave them in a safe environment while they are at work.[/p][p]One of the most satisfying achievements in the last 10 years is seeing some of our original intake of children, who would at the time have been 5 or 6 years old, staying in touch with us and coming back, to themselves volunteer to help in The Julia Centre.[/p][p]We are very proud of them and hope to be able to continue the work we are doing at this crucial stage of these children’s and young adult’s lives. Thank you for your continued support.[/p][p]http://www.juliathomsonmemorial.com/[/p]
