My story

[p]Dear Reader[/p] [p]Why am I walking from York to Canterbury?[/p] [p]In the autumn of 2010, I walked from Edinburgh to London, then, in July 2011, from Land’s End to London.  This year, in September 2012, I have decided to walk, and write a blog about, the 330 miles from York to Canterbury with echoes of Chaucer’s Tales.[/p] [p]I am now in my seventy-first year.  In the last three years, I will have walked over 1,100 miles for the vulnerable in Zimbabwe.[/p] [p]Why am I doing this?  Because the situation in Zimbabwe is worse than ever.  How else can we draw attention to what is going on? This is an especially difficult task while other disasters and events occupy the media and the attention of the public.[/p] [p]In Zimbabwe several hundred frail and elderly pensioners, whose assets and pensions were comprehensively destroyed by the worst inflation recorded anywhere in the world, are still effectively imprisoned in Mugabe’s randomly brutal and often terrifying police state. Many are now wholly dependent for their very survival on the generosity of ZANE donors.   Despite our vigorous efforts, the desperate needs of those who live in the High Density Areas far outstrip what ZANE can afford.  Over the last few years in Zimbabwe prices have risen 500% and the number of people desperate for help has increased hugely.[/p] [p]If you look at the ZANE website at www.zane.uk.com you will see the reasons why ZANE is a unique charity in Africa. Please also read the endorsements made by numerous eminent people who have seen something of ZANE’s work.[/p] [p]I pay tribute to our loyal and brave staff in Zimbabwe, who with selfless kindness and for eight long years, have supported so many old and needy people. Please imagine how hard and profoundly depressing it is for them to turn away the poor and the old, the vulnerable and the desperate, because ZANE lacks the resources.[/p] [p]Please will you sponsor me for my next walk this September and really help save lives?[/p] [p]Yours sincerely[/p] [p][/p] [p]Tom Benyon O.B.E.[/p] [p]PS. In 20010/11 ZANE was chosen as one of the Telegraph Media Group’s Christmas charities.  [/p]

ZANE is a wonderful cause and we must act to support it. The situation of the pensioners and families in Zimbabwe is obviously critical and we need to support them.

Another great walk to help so many Zimbabweans whose plight is certainly not of their own making. We have enjoyed your blog each day. We lived there for over 30 years and have family still living there.
